If you receive regular dental check ups and find you are still experiencing tooth pain it may be that your gums are receding. As you get older even those who are conscious of regular dental health can experience receding gums. Receding gums can cause tooth sensitivity to the temperature of food and wind. The tooth pain can be so extensive one can think they are experiencing a pain from a tooth cavity.

As you get older the gums protecting the tooth draw back making the gum line higher. Receding gums expose root areas of the tooth that are use to being protected by a lower gum line. Bacteria, air, and temperature all can cause pain to this sensitive tooth area. There are ways to lessen the pain and protect the delicate tooth root that is exposed.

When visiting your dentist advise them of the pain you are experiencing. This will allow them to make an examination to ensure there isn't another underlying problem other then receding gums. Once it is determined receding gums is the cause of your problem you can diminish the pain at home. How? By using the following two options:

Two options to use to diminish the tooth pain from receding gums:

  1. Rinse your mouth with a bottle cap full of peroxide. Rinse well and then brush your teeth. The peroxide will help to kill the bacteria that has gathered on the tooth root helping to decrease sensitivity of the root.
  2. Use a sensitive teeth toothpaste like Sensodyne. Brushing regularly with a teeth sensitive toothpaste helps to desensitize the root of the tooth and will eventually eliminate the pain altogether.

It is important to ask your dentist what firmness of toothbrush is best for your circumstances. Using a toothbrush that is hard can cause additional harm and pain to the exposed root area when you have receding gums. The pain from receding gums may not be avoidable and can be painful. It is good to know the discomfort from receding gums is manageable and can be controlled with time.
