Dog grooming is nothing but caring for your dog that includes cutting its hair, bathing it, trimming its nails, cleaning its teeth, ears, etc. thereby maintaining good dog health, hygiene and improving the appearance of the dog in general. It is recommended that you practice grooming your dog from when it is young because many times it is a bit difficult to groom the older dogs that are not used to this maintenance.

Tips on Grooming Your Dog

Tips for Bathing Your Dog

Big or small, every dog needs bathing after a fixed interval of time. Since dogs are active pets that love being outdoors, they get dirty often and hence need regular bathing. Bathing is necessary not only for keeping your dog clean but also for keeping it away from various diseases and infections. Small dogs need bathing after two to three months, while big dogs may need after every one month. You may need to immediately bathe the dog in situations when the dog gets too dirty by rolling in mud or messing up with yard waste. Before you bathe the dog, it is necessary that you brush the dog with a comb to remove mats, if any. See that you use shampoo and other products that suit your dog. Ensure that you cover the ear holes of the dog with cotton buds before bathing. Place a rubber mat for proper support to the dog feet. You can use a tub for bathing the dog along with a hose spray. Wet the dog thoroughly and then apply the shampoo to its body. Then rinse the shampoo gently from head to tail and form lather. You have to be careful while shampooing the dog's head as many dogs dislike this. See that the shampoo does not get into its eyes. Use lukewarm water for washing the dog. Once you are done with bathing the dog, use a blower to dry the dog. See that you maintain proper temperature of the blower and work on a single area at a time. Do not bathe your dog very often, as this will remove the natural oils present on its skin.

Tips for Brushing

Routine brushing is must for every dog and is considered as one of the most intensified jobs to keep your dog's coat clean and healthy. Brushing is necessary to keep the dog hair in good condition, like removing tangles formed, skin dirt, dog fleas, dead skin and keeping the skin clean. Brushing period depends on the type of hair your dog has. For smooth haired dogs, brushing once in a week is enough while for those with long silky hair it is necessary that you brush on a daily basis. You need to be careful while brushing your dog; see that you start brushing from the head and gradually end up at the tail and legs. In case of mats, remove them carefully by holding the skin where the mat is formed. Brush the dog in the direction of hair growth. Use brushes that are specially made for pet dog grooming. Regular brushing is necessary to uniformly spread the natural oils on the dog skin.

Tips for Cutting Nails

The grooming part that dogs hate the most is nail clipping. This can hurt your dog if you are not careful enough while operating the clipping equipment on the dog. Overgrown nails can lead to many problems and hence need to be removed at the earliest. Many times it happens that dogs are not used to others touching their feet, so it is necessary that you initially make your dog get used to this, for proper nail clipping. It is important that you make the dog habituated to nail clipping from young age. Gently lift its leg and move your hands around its feet and make it feel comfortable. Nail clipping can be painful hence you need to handle it very carefully. Purchase a nail trimmer especially made for dogs from a nearby store. Nail grinders are also one of the good options for nail clipping that hurt less. The best time to clip the nails is when your dog is calm. Hold the paw of the dog firmly in your hand and work on the overgrown nails. See that you do not cut near the quick, that contains nerves. In case you cut it by mistake then apply some powder on the area and hold it for sometime. Professional dog grooming may be required for nail clipping if you are not confident enough to do it on your own.

Tips for Cleaning Ears and Teeth

Clean ears and teeth are important for dogs as for humans. Ears must be cleaned regularly to prevent ear infections. Since dogs have long ear canals, it is necessary that they be cleaned from time to time. Use a recommended ear solution by a veterinarian and use it to clean the ears of your dog with the help of a clean cloth or soft cotton ball. Follow the instructions given on the ear solution and clean the ears accordingly. Teeth should be cleaned regularly using recommended pet toothpaste. Cleaning teeth is necessary because your dog performs a number of activities with its mouth. Plaque can build up in your dog's teeth that may lead to many other dog health problems. Regular cleaning can help avoid these problems. Do not use human toothpaste for cleaning dog's teeth and purchase a brush specially made for dogs.

The importance and benefits of grooming your dog are many and you can ensure good health of your dog with the above-mentioned dog grooming tips. As mentioned earlier, many of the pet owners opt for professional dog grooming as they are afraid. But you can have a great time with your dog during the grooming process and improve the bonding between you two.

It is fun to have your puppy running around the house but as it grows bigger things get a little difficult, more so for the dog. Large dogs need space just like we do, therefore finding them the right dog kennel becomes important. Purchasing doghouses for large dogs can get expensive, instead it is much better to build one on your own. If you are not well versed with carpentry, then you can always give the construction plan to an affordable carpenter in your locality. You will find different types of dog house plans on the Internet, all you need to do is invest some time in searching out the most suitable design and to replicate it in your own workshop.

Big Dogs Need Big Kennels
The size of the doghouse completely depends on the size of the dog. The bigger the dog, the larger will be its kennel. Some dog breeds such as Alsatians, Doberman, Saint Bernard, or the Labrador need huge kennels to sleep and turn around in. Though, the doghouse should not be too big, as the dog may feel lonely or uncomfortable in it. The kennel must be equivalent to the area within your house where your dog prefers to sleep the most. These places are often under the staircase, in the corner of the drawing room near the fireplace or on its mattress.

That is the reason why you must also think of building an insulated dog house, so that they can remain warm during wet and cold weather. You can even install a doghouse heater to keep your beloved pet safe from severe winter conditions such as snow and blizzards. There are specially constructed heated dog houses for large dogs available in the market. Though if you live in really hot terrains, then buying or building raised dog houses will ensure greater ventilation so as to keep the room temperature comfortable for the dog.

How to Build a Doghouse?
Remember not to scrounge too much on your budget by using substandard materials, because if you do; the doghouse is not going to last very long. Also remember that dogs are very sensitive to heat so do not use materials such as plastic or metal for making the entire doghouse.
  • The first step is to measure your dogs width and height so that you can figure out how big the entry should be as well as the inner room.
  • In order to ensure the safety of your dog, make the foundation of the doghouse on an elevated slope. So that when it rains, the water does not wet the floor of the doghouse. While the slope will ensure that if any water does manage to enter, it will flow down the slope out of the kennel. You can build the slope by making a mound by piling mud.
  • Use pressure treated wood if possible as it will last much longer and will not get damaged by moisture that easily. Though if you do not wish to use this type of wood, then remember to paint the frames of wood before fixing them.
  • Start building from the base upwards, make a strong floor with the wooden frames and make sure they are all made smooth with sandpaper.
  • While making the base make sure you create an outlet for any liquid or solid waste to pass through into a nearby compost hole. Though, this is just a precautionary measure as well-trained dogs will never soil their kennels.
  • Next, attach the walls according to the design of the doghouse plan and ensure that the planks are steady and sturdy.
  • Now, add a flat roof while ensuring that there is enough cross ventilation. A slanted roof will be much more difficult to build all by yourself.
There are many varieties of dog houses to select from. The choice is all yours, though you need to keep in mind the climate you live in as well as the size of your dog. There are even duplex dog houses that are made for accommodating two dogs at a time. These dog houses have a detachable barricade that act as the wall between the two rooms in the kennel.

Dogs are man's best friend and suffer from many illnesses like man. Dogs can develop many dog allergies and infections that lead to skin diseases. Skin disorders in dogs are amongst the most common conditions that a vet treats. Dogs can be infected with many parasites like fleas, mites, fungus, etc, that lead to skin disorders in dogs. Many times dogs keep scratching an irritated skin that leads to development of secondary bacterial infections.

Parasitic Skin Disorder in Dogs
The most common causes of skin diseases are parasites. Fleas are often the main cause. The other parasites that lead to skin conditions are mites that causes 'mange'. Mites, lice, ticks, etc. are other parasites that may cause these condition. The dog becomes irritated with these parasites living in his coat and keeps scratching. This leads to many skin disorders in dogs.

Symptoms of Diseases Due to Parasites
In case of ear mites in dogs, the dog will experience severe irritation in his ears. You will observe that the dog keeps scratching the back of his ear. Most of the time front legs are affected by the disease and in many cases it is a generalized infection.

Treatment
The vet may advise cleaning the dogs ears thoroughly after sedating the animal. There will be a couple of follow-up treatments in which the doctor may apply ointments and solutions to kill the mites. He may also prescribe insecticidal dips, sprays, powders, etc. for home treatment. The vet may also prescribe dis, shampoos, dog flea collars, foams and floggers to get rid of lice, ticks and fleas.

Treatment for mange includes clipping of the infected area and giving an antiseptic wash. The vet may advise use of anti mite dips twice or thrice a wee. You need to plug the dogs ears and protect the eyes with mineral oil before applying the dip. In case of infection, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics.Allergic Skin Disorders in Dogs
Dogs can develop severe allergic reactions due to hypersensitivity to allergens. The most common cause of skin diseases due to allergy is flea saliva. Even a single flea bite can lead to a severe allergic reaction. Other causes include house dusts, molds and pollens. Sometimes dogs develop 'contact allergy' due to chemicals in soaps, waxes, carpets and flea collars. Insect bites and stings may also lead to skin disorders in dogs.

Symptoms of Skin Diseases Due to Allergy

Flea allergies are seen on the back and near the tail. Pollen and dust allergies cause swelling of face, feet, chest and abdomen. You will observe allergies on the abdomen and the feet pads due to contact allergy.

Treatment
The vet may administer antihistamines and corticosteroids to provide relief form the intense itching. Immunotherapy is also tried by many vets to help control the hyposensitization in dogs.

Bacterial Skin Disorder in Dogs
The main causes of this form of disease is Staphylococci. Staph is a common skin bacteria that is found on every dog. These opportunistic bacteria causes infections, when it finds an opening in the body due to skin injury or continuous scratching.

Symptoms of Skin Diseases Due to Bacteria

The most common skin area to be infected by bacteria is chin that is called 'chin acne'. Obese dogs, pug nose breeds, etc. also develop bacterial infections in the face, vulva and lip region. Puppies are commonly affected by bacterial diseases between the toes, calluses of the elbows, etc.

Treatment
The vet may shave off the hair around the lesions, and give the dog a bath with antiseptic shampoos. Antibiotics may be administered orally for 3 to 4 weeks. The vet may give antiseptic shampoos, antibiotics ointment and antibiotic tablets to get rid of the infections.

Fungal Skin Disorders in Dogs
The most common causes are due to microsporum and trichophyton. These fungal infections are commonly known as 'ringworm' diseases.

Symptoms of Skin Diseases Due to Fungi
You will observe circular patches, dry crusty skin in dogs infected with ringworm. The legs and head are commonly infected by ringworm that can spread to other parts of the body.

Treatment
Treatment for ringworm in dogs involves clipping of hair and use of anti fungal shampoos to bathe the dog. The vet will advice topical lime sulfur and systemics to be administered.

Hormonal Skin Disorders in Dogs
The main causes are due to disorders in the hormonal secretions of the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary glands, testicles and ovaries. The hyper or hypo secretions lead to many skin disorders that cause changes in the hair coat and skin.

Symptoms of Skin Diseases Due to Hormones
You will observe hair loss, thinner or thicker skin and changes in the color of the skin and hair coat. The dog will not be itchy and scratchy due to hormonal skin disorders in dogs.

Treatment
It is a symptom of a serious disorder in dogs. The vet may treat the underlying disorder to treat the skin disorder. Many times surgical neutering or spraying may help reduce the symptoms of skin disorders in dogs.

If you observe anything that is not normal, speak to the vet. Dog health should be the number one factor in pet care. Give proper dog care and keep the dog in hygienic conditions. Dog grooming, like brushing and bathing, should be carried out at least once a week. Use antiseptic shampoos to reduce the chances of infections. A healthy skin is a sign of a healthy and happy dog.

Many homeowners experience the destruction gophers cause in their yards, gardens and lawns. Gophers are a problem to gardeners and those who like their lawns to look nice and neat. Gophers dig holes, make tunnels underground and eat the roots of plants, which kills garden plants, flowers and pretty decorative greenery. Gophers can do a lot of damage and ruin your hard work with a nibble here and a nibble there. There are some ways to get rid of gophers and take your yard, garden and lawn back without hurting the gophers. Humane choices are the best way to handle the problem. Even though gophers can be a problem for those with a green thumb they do have their place in the environment and handling them with hurting or killing them is much better than destroying them.

Human Hair

Use your hair and the hair from your family. Gophers do not like human hair. They are scared away by the scent of people and nothing carries the scent better than hair.

Collect hair from hair brushes and keep hair trimmings from haircuts.

Put the hair in the gopher holes to make them leave.

Leave clumps of hair around the garden where gophers are known to be a problem.

Dog Fur

Just as human hair deters gophers, so does dog fur. Save your dogs fur from brushing or gather the fur the dog has shedded on your floors and furniture. If you dont have a dog or have a non-shedding dog, visit your local groomer and ask for some dog fur. You may get a few strange looks and double takes, but hey it gets rid of the gophers. Gophers are afraid of dogs and will leave their holes when they smell the scent of a dog.

Essential Oils as Gopher Deterrents

Use essential oils. Gophers are naturally repelled by peppermint, citronella or lavender ess
ential oil or castor oil.

Put a few drops of the essential oil on a small piece of a rag, cotton balls or a small pieces of newspaper.

Place the essential oil soaked material in gopher holes and spread it around the lawn, yard and garden to keep gophers away.

Instant Rice and Instant Grits Gets Rid of Gophers

Use instant rice or instant grits.

Place the instant rice or grits into the gopher hole or sprinkle it around the outside of the hole. The gophers will eat it and get a stomach ache because they cannot digest it properly.

Once they feel ill, they will leave your property because they will associate the illness with your property.

Repel Gophers with Garlic and Onions

Chop garlic and onions in your food processor.

Use 8 to 10 cloves of garlic and 4 to 6 onions until they are a liquid.

After you have pureed the garlic and onions, add 3 to 4 tablespoons of cayenne pepper and 1 cup of water.

Pour the mixture into the gopher hole.

Commercially Available Gopher Repellants

Home and garden centers and online stores carry a line of gopher repellents if you dont find success with the home remedies above.

Sometimes gophers become smart and savvy and not fall for your trickery making buying a gopher repellant necessary and useful.
Use any one of these methods to get rid of the gophers destroying your yard, garden or lawn.

Clipping dog nails should be a regular part of dog grooming as it indirectly helps maintain good dog health. Trimming dog nails help decrease the chances of broken nails that bleed profusely or curling of nails that grow into the dog's feet.

When you hear click-click on the floor, it means it's time to clip your dog's nails. Do not put off trimming dog nails till your next visit to the vet. You can observe the vet while he clips the nails and understand how to do it yourself.

How to Trim Dog Nails

You need to buy clippers that are specially designed for dogs. You should bring a strong claw cutter for bigger dog breeds. You should keep a small file handy to file down jagged edges. Also keep a styptic pen around, just in case you clip into the dog's nerves.

The Dog Nail Anatomy
It is very important to understand the structure of a dog's nail. The dog's nail is made of a hard outer covering and an inner soft part. The hard part protects the inner soft part as it contains blood vessels and nerve endings. You can see faint pink colored nerves in light colored dog nails. If your dog has a black or dark-colored nail, the pink part will be almost invisible. This makes it very difficult while trimming dog nails. You need to just clip off the nibbles instead of the nail as you cannot see the delicate nerve endings.

While clipping keep checking for a dark spot in the middle of the clipped nail. This is the start of the nerve endings and if you clip further you may hurt the dog. In case of dark nails, look out for a pale third inner circle. This means you need to stop clipping here. You also need to clip the dew claws that are inside the legs and these may curl in leading to lot of pain. You need to trim them too.

Guide
You need to help the dog relaxed and make him lie down on a table. Make sure you place a rubber mat over the table to avoid slipping of the dog while sleeping or standing. You need to call in some help if your dog is too big or fidgety, to hold him in place. If the dog is used to clipping from puppyhood or is as calm as an angel, you can carry out the process single-handedly.

Now, make sure the clipping tool is sharp enough to avoid any kind of pain to the animal. You should begin clipping dog nail from under the dog's claw upwards. Do not clip the nails downward. Place the tool in the right place and once your dog is steady enough, squeeze firmly and the nail will come off.

You should position the clippers just a little above the pink tissue. If needed, file the remaining nail to a shorter length. You need to do this very gently and slowly to avoid cutting off blood vessels and nerves.

If you have cut off the nerve ends by accident, quickly apply pressure with styptic powder or pad. If you do not have styptic powder, baby powder and cotton ball will do. Do not wipe off the tip of the nail after the bleeding stops. Do not allow the dog to lick the wound as it will cause infections. Also, the dog may be a bit hyper due to the pain and you need to help him relax. If the bleeding continues for more than 5 or 7 minutes, it's time to call in the vet immediately.

You need to carry out trimming of dog nails once or twice a month. Trimming dog nails is very important to maintain proper health and hygiene of the dog's feet. Long nails may get stuck in the carpet or sofas and break. This will cause a lot of pain, bleeding and may lead to infections. Also, ingrown nails do not paint a healthy dog picture. A little attention on your side will help save you and your dog a lot of trouble.

You know, I've always thought of adoption as a particularly noble deed, as it no doubt is, but one that needs an exceptionally generous heart. While I may be right, I'm also fairly certain that when you decide to bring a canine member into your family, you won't need an exceptionally generous heart - what you will need is will power, to stop you from bringing home more than one. From one dog lover to another, I don't think there's anything cuter in the whole world than a puppy - yes panda babies and tiger cubs come close, but let's face it, you may have a few problems (like survival) with a tiger cub, that will eventually grow into, well, a tiger, and the baby panda might just land you in jail. So let's stick to the adoption of puppies shall we? I promise, though I doubt you need me to, that save for a few incidents while puppy potty training, and a few chewing incidents that we won't talk about right now, you won't be disappointed.

Why Adoption is Better than Buying a Puppy

Before you head to a pet store to buy a purebred puppy, stop for a minute and think. Puppies are super cute, but they do need consistent and constant supervision and care. If you're new to raising dogs, and the thought of coming home to a happy bundle of fur is one of the motivating factors that's influencing your decision to pick from a list of puppies for adoption, it's time for a reality check. If you work, and your lifestyle would mean leaving an unsupervised puppy at home for hours on end, it's not just unwise to bring home a puppy, it's cruel. Pet separation anxiety can wreak havoc on a home, but the damage that it inflicts on a young pup's mind is difficult to undo. Puppies are a full-time affair - so unless you have the time and the patience to deal with the housebreaking, the chewing, nipping, teething, exercising and grooming, pet adoption, specifically the adoption of puppies, is not a fair choice to make.

If however, you feel that you will be able to accommodate the needs of a pet, and adjustments to your lifestyle are a small price to pay for the love and companionship that are part and happy parcel, dog adoption is for you. You may want to choose a pet from a professional breeder or a pet store, but before you do, take the time to visit the pound or an animal shelter close to you. If nothing else, you'll have spent a while with the animals there, and you never know, you might find yourself forming an instant bond with what will become a friend for life. Although it's the norm to make a selection from puppies, adopting a dog is also an option to consider. Many dogs, abandoned by owners who have moved elsewhere, or just couldn't care less, will make wonderful companions to new owners - all they look for, and I say this without exception, is love and affection. While abandoned dogs may require a while for rehabilitation, you will need no further reward, than a warm head that rests on your feet with contentment. If you're chosen as the lucky one to be allowed to give your dog a belly rub, you have reason to feel proud - only a very secure dog will lie down belly up, it's a dog behavior thing.

There are a number of places you can visit to pick out puppies. If you're looking for a specific breed, for instance if you're on the lookout for German Shepherd puppies, an internet search will help you locate a shelter that can fulfill your requirements. Though many people (and I confess I was one too, but am now a convert) have a pure breed fixation, many are unaware that mixed breeds are often more resistant to genetic disorders and health issues that arise from excessive inbreeding. The obsession with pure breeds is sort of like a perverse dog racism, isn't it? Adopting a pet and giving it a loving home and family is a wonderful thing to do - dogs especially are so very easy to love and so eager to please, they can brighten up the gloomiest day. Bring home a dog and you've got yourself the best friend ever - guaranteed!

How to Use Market Samurai's Key Features

If you truly want to make money online, whether by writing articles or setting up your own website, you have to do your research before starting. This article will show you how to use Market Samurai to not only find great keywords to write about, but also to check out your online competition for that keyword. It isn't enough to have a great keyword that everyone is searching for. You have to be able to make your way to the first page of Google if you want to see real income for it.

Online Money to be Made

Why is Researching Your Competition so Important?

If your article or website isn't showing up on the first page of Google, people aren't finding it. If people aren't finding it, they aren't visiting it. And if people aren't visiting your website or article, you aren't making any money. It's that simple.

If you just want to make a preliminary search of your competition, simply type in your chosen keyword in the google search box and look at the sites that come up. The problem with this approach is that you really can't see the behind the scenes details as to why these sites are ranking so well. Is it because they are page rank 5 or higher? Do they have a million backlinks to their site? Do they have several .edu or .gov backlinks pointing to their site? (Google loves backlinks from .edu and .gov.) Or are they simply lucky that there isn't a stronger website out there (hint, hint). By the way, in the rest of the article I will be using the word website, but feel free to substitute article. It all works the same.

Market Samurai (A Keyword Research Primer)

Once you download the trial version of Market Samurai, or purchase it outright, you are set to start researching keywords and competition. A special note here: Even if you are sold on Market Samurai and have already decided to purchase it, download the free trial first. This simple act will get you a major price reduction.

When you are ready to start, open Market Samurai and click on New Project. Enter a general Keyword or Niche you want to research and hit the Create Button. This will take you to the main Market Samurai menu screen. Your first step is to see what kinds of keywords you can get from your general one, so click on KeyWord Research. From there press 'generate keywords'. You will need to have a google adwords account set up as this is where the information is pulled from. This process takes a few minutes. Be patient, it's worth it.

Once you have your list of keywords, click at the bottom right of the screen on Keyword Analysis. This will bring you to another screen where you can enter your preferences. Move your mouse slowly over the options at the top of the screen to see what each option means. Enter your choices and hit Analyze Keywords. Again this takes a few minutes.

When it has finished processing all the information you will be left with a page of suitable keywords for your niche that meet your general guidelines (the options you chose above). You will be able to see not only how many searches are made for the keyword, but also and how much SEO competition there is, along with a lot of other pretty nifty information.

Market Samurai for SEO Competition Research

The next step is to choose a few to research competition on. Pick your favorites by clicking on the little box to the left of the keyword. Start with just a few. Once you've made your selections, go to the bottom of the page and click on 'Actions on Selected'. Choose the option to open a tab for each selected keyword. Your selected keywords will now show across the top of the screen. Click on one and it will take you back to the Main Menu screen.

To check out your online competition for your chosen keyword, select 'SEO Competition'. Just leave all the boxes at the top checked and select Generate Results. In my opinion this is what makes Market Samurai a simple must have. Once all the data is processed you will see a simple to understand, color-coded screen. In a nutshell, red is bad and green is good.

This page will break down the top 10 results by a number of things, including the page's rank, how many backlinks it has, how many .edu or .gov links it has, and more. If you see a lot of green and sites that are ranked 1 or 0, you stand a good chance at being able to rank for this keyword.

How About a Case Study in Action?

While I was writing this article, I had Market Samurai up and was going through the steps as I typed. I chose an almost impossible niche to rank in, dogs, just to see if I could find a viable keyword. Once I set my parameters as to number of SEOT (this is the number of visits a number one ranked site could expect in a day) to 9 and my maximum SEO competition (SEOC) to 15,000Dogs--a next to impossible Niche
-- I was left with only two options: Milbemax Dog Wormer and Harrington's Dog Food.

The Milbemax Dog Wormer keyword came back with an SEOT of 18 and a SEOC of only 394, which is fantastically low in the way of competition. I clicked the little box and added the keyword as a tab and went to check out the competition. What came up was 1 website page ranked 5, one site ranked 1, and 8 ranked 0. Promising. Furthermore, there was a lot of green on the page, showing a lot of places where I could easily outrank them. I should be able to get to number two without too much effort in the way of backlinks, etc.

Hmm, now I have to write an article on this dog wormer...if I could rank 2 (no way could I beat a page rank 5 for 1) I should be able to get several visits a day, and this would be an excellent click thru article as people looking for this would most likely be ready to buy it. And all from typing 'Dogs' into Market Samurai.

So now that you know how to use Market Samurai, research those keywords and start writing!

There are river cruises for every skill level from a simple float down a lazy river to a Level 5 trip through the most tempestuous rapids. Kayak, canoe or raft, the Guadalupe can satisfy the adrenaline cravings of any adventuresome family.

An Elevated Look at Texas

Austin & the Texas Hill Country

While most of Texas has, justifiably, been considered a long and flat stretch of land fading into the far off distance, there is one section of the state that rises head and shoulders above the rest, the area around, near and west of Austin known as the Texas Hill Country.

The Hill Country is famously family friendly as it encompasses dozens of New and Old World cultures. In particular, there is an amazing fusion of Spanish and German culture in the region that has seen remarkable innovations in the music and food of both cultures.

The area is notably famous for its hunting but, unless thats a family tradition, you are better off heading towards more traditional family pursuits. The area hosts the original and incomparable Schlitterbahn Water Park where there is simply no better place get soaked on an afternoon with your family. Also nearby is the Seaworld and Six Flags Fiesta where fun can be had by anyone from six to sixty.

A Natural Wonderland

El Paso and Big Bend National Park

- The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.

When they sang those memorable words, they must have been thinking of the area around the Big Bend in far West Texas. The area is sublime in its other worldliness. The flora and fauna is abundant everywhere but you would swear there is not another living thing anywhere near you.

The Big Bend National Park is a place of splendid isolation. It is an idyllic paradise for the family that likes to hike, bike, raft and camp. The land is unforgiving and the Rio Grande River is forbidding but any family that undertakes to traverse this awesome landscape will take home memories that will last a lifetime. Fortunately, there are innumerable companies and guides to make your passage both exciting and safe.

On the other hand, the city of El Paso is entirely different and a decided step back in time. While it offers all the amenities of a modern American city, it still has the feel of the Old Southwest. There are modern sports venues alongside old cantinas. The city will truly transport you back in time.

In this modern age, we have devices to complete all our work. It's basically a hassle free environment. The world has become a smaller place; but distances between people have increased. People feel they have everything yet they crave for a companion who can give them unconditional love and care. So how about bringing that close companion home to fill up that void people feel everyday? How about adopting a dog then?

It is always a delightful experience to adopt a dog and welcome a new member into your family. Dogs are wonderful as pets, they are stress busters. Normally, people purchase dogs from pet shops. Before going to a nearby pet shop read this article and try to adopt a dog from a shelter or a pound.

Approximately 4 million dogs are killed each year due to overpopulation of their breed. About 25 to 30% dogs which are in dog shelters or pounds are purebred. The others are a bunch of lovely dog breeds waiting to be your perfect friend. Shelter dogs are wonderful companions.

Humane societies and animal rescue workers guide people who are willing to adopt dogs from pounds and shelters. Adoption saves lives; don't think that shelters have badly bred dogs. These wonderful animals are just victims of bad circumstances and irresponsible owners.

Adopting Dogs from Shelters
  • Find out a local dog shelter in your block. Search the Internet or the telephone book for the country animal control office.
  • Make an appointment with the dog shelter to visit the dogs. Try to visit the dog shelter in person to have a clearer picture. See how the dog behaves in his kennel or shelter.
  • Interact with the volunteer or the staff members, discuss with them your lifestyle so that they can give you a suitable advice on dog adoption.
  • Another advantage of adopting dogs from shelters is that the fees are usually much less than the price of a dog bought form a pet shop.
  • Some people have their hearts set on small dogs and puppies; Both of them are an ideal choice as a pet for your children.
  • Just remember one thing; adopting small dogs and puppies is a big responsibility. They require constant attention and care. Small dogs like chihuahua, poodles and puppies can also be found in these shelters.
  • German Shepherd puppies found in the shelters are a favorite among kids.
  • Elderly people can look for grown up dogs who are generally quite calm.
How long does it take to Adopt a Dog?

So after knowing about the adoption of the dog, let's check out how long does it take to do so. Well, it doesn't take long to adopt a dog from the pound or shelter. It entirely depends upon you, once you have set your heart on the cute animal, just ask them about the adoption policies, have a discussion with the staff members. You can take your new family member home on the same day! Do bring in your kids along; so that they can interact with the dog and get familiar with it. Do inquire about the medical history (vaccinations, worming, spraying or neutering) of the dog and write down the details of the veterinary care the dog has received before adoption. Then pay the respective dues of buying and vaccination. Some dog shelters have a routine check every month to see how well are you adjusting with your dog and vice versa. Collect the receipt from the office, slip on the collar around your dog's neck and feel proud of having saved an innocent life.

Cost of Adopting a Dog

It doesn't cost much to save the life of a dog. The adoption fees to adopt a dog from the shelter vary from $10 to $80. Vaccination and initial medical expenses cost up to $100 depending on the medical history of the dog.

Adopting a dog and just bringing it home is not enough. Apart from knowing how to adopt a dog, you should also know how to care for it. As the dog is new to your home, it is very necessary that the dog familiarizes with your surroundings. Keep interacting with the dog, try to understand its needs.

Give a dog, a loving home and you'll get love in return. The dog can fill the void in your life. If you adopt with real care and love you will gain much more in return. The happiness and satisfaction which you get is immense. Adopt a dog now. Enrich a Life!

A dog is absolutely the best friend a human being can have, giving him bliss all his life, and I think that is what Charles Schulz meant when he said, "Happiness is a warm puppy!" So if you have a dog, it is up to you to provide him with the best care and comfort that he deserves. Dogs can suffer from a multitude of diseases, ranging from common cold to depression! This article deals with one particular infection that can afflict a dog, but which can be confused with common cold - Respiratory Infection.

This infection usually affects nasal cavities, bronchi, trachea and throat, which constitute the upper respiratory tract in dogs. Hence this infection is commonly called Upper Respiratory Tract (URT) Infection. URTI in dogs can be Viral or Bacterial. It can become serious if neglected and can even prove fatal. The causes of this infection are bacterial/viral pathogens, for example: Mycoplasma, Bordetella Bronchiseptica, Canine Distemper and Influenza Viruses, and in rare cases Lung Flukes (Paragonimus Kellicotti), and Nasal Mites (Pneumonyssoides Caninum). We'll see the different types of respiratory infections in dogs, and then find out the dos and don'ts when caring for him.

Types of Respiratory Infections

Kennel Cough
This is characterized by a deep hacking sound as if the dog is trying to remove cough from his throat. This is also the most common type and usually gets cured by itself within 2-3 weeks, although the vet may prescribe medication like cough suppressants, steroids or antibiotics. There are also a few home remedies for kennel cough that you can try.

Rhinotracheitis
This is majorly characterized by high fever and loss of the dog's appetite. Other symptoms are sneezing, coughing, and discharge from eyes and nose.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is actually a pathogen that is found in the eyes and the nasal tract of the dog. Other than runny nose and watery eyes, the dog will discharge a clear substance from both these places. There is increase in coughing and salivation.

Calicivirus
In this type of infection the dog tends to develop ulcers in his mouth besides the usual symptoms like coughing, sneezing frequently, etc.

The best way to ensure that your 'furry delight' does not fall ill, is to adhere to some basic dog care routines. It helps to ensure that your dog is eating regularly. If he has not eaten for more than 48 hours, it is an indication that something is wrong with his health. In such a case it is best to contact the vet even if he is not showing any particular symptoms. The stools of a dog are pretty accurate indicators of his well-being. Watch out for loose motions, smelly stools, blood in stools or some color difference. Other than this, a few basic and simple precautions will help your dog stay in the best of health.

The DOs

Ensure that your dog is regularly vaccinated.

Make sure that you are providing your dog with a nutritious and healthy diet.

Maintain basic hygiene of your dog, like regular bathing, using tic powders, combing his coat, etc. The frequency of these activities depends on the kind of breed he belongs to.

Give him regular and enough exercise.

Make sure your dog is potty trained and his usual resting area is not littered. This is usually a concern when the dog is less than 8-10 months old.

Contact the vet if any of the symptoms persist for more than a couple of days.

The DON'Ts

Prevent your dog from licking or scratching himself, by using suitable collars.

Do not let your dog get in contact with stray dogs or other infected dogs. Stray dogs are not vaccinated, so if they bite or lick your dog, he could contract diseases.

Although a few medicines which are used by us can be given to dogs, strictly avoid giving him medicines without consulting with the vet.

Do not take your dog out in public places like gardens, when he is suffering from an infection, lest he spread the infection.

Treating a sick dog can sometimes be a prolonged process and it requires a lot of patience and also a little knowledge about their diseases. So, be observant and take action as soon as symptoms start to appear. With all the trust your dog puts in you, and all the love he gives you, I'm sure taking care of him when he's sick will not be an issue!

So about a month ago I purchased several types of dog attack deterrent sprays from Sabre online. You see, I grew up in the country and anyone from the woods knows that dogs over there are unforgiving. They aren't there to look pretty, they are there to defend territory. So I developed a mistrust for dogs, and any animal capable of seriously hurting me of the ones I love (and yes that includes humans). In urban life, it's less common to have aggressive dogs unleashed on you but it can happen.

I personally love doing urban running and 'Parcour' and sometimes that leads me into dangerous places where i don't know what to expect. Therefore I carry one of the smaller versions of this pepper spray around with me at all times when running. Some might want to use it for personal defence against people. In Canada, this is illegal. I know, it's ridiculous, but you cannot protect yourself with pepper spray in Canada. But I won't tell if you don't.

So here's what I've found testing these on myself, and my friends. First of all, the sensation is like pouring gasoline on your face and lighting it. Yeah, that bad. Your eyes swell and tear up, you can barely breathe, and frankly can't do anything after getting this in the face. I can only imagine what a dog feels after getting a shot of this in the nose. After about an hour, skin will stop feeling like it's burning. Water helps a lot.

They're also very (almost too easy) to discharge. Simply turn the red button to the side and it instantly becomes ready to fire. I only worry that it could accidentally discharge inside a purse or worst, your jeans if you knock them the wrong way. Wind is also a variable. Strong winds can keep the unit from sending its load in the right direction.

Sabre have a variety of Pepper spray formats and colors and can be bought equipped with holsters, key chain clips and belt clips. It goes from the small and portable 22 gram that delivers 25 separate 1 second bursts up to 3 meters (10 feet) away, to the slightly chubby but more effective 50 gram pray (photo) which delivers 10 separate 1 second bursts up to meters away. I even purchased 2 pink ones to give out to my female friends but they found the Barbie pink tone a bit much. Kinda looks like a vibrator. Tongue out

The commercial or processed dog food is considered to be injurious for your dog's health as it comprises preservatives, and most times even the nutrients are overcooked. This type of food may cause allergies, severe itching and many health related problems in dogs. Hence, to avoid such conditions, it is always recommended to give your dog food free of contaminations, artificial flavors and colors. Since most part of the dog's nutritional requirements is the same as humans, try making your own dog food containing water, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals in right proportions to keep your dog happy and healthy. A simple home recipe dog food comprises homemade dog food ingredients like cook brown rice, ground meat, vegetables, water and small amount of brewers yeast. Since dogs can't digest vegetables very well, the vegetables should be processed before adding. The quantity of water mainly depends upon whether you want to keep the dog food dry or wet.

Dog Food Preparation

Following are few steps that will help you in preparing homemade dog food:
  • Always cook the meat before giving it to the dog. Meats recommended to be used are liver, beef, tuna, lamb or chicken. In fact, organ meat (like liver, kidneys, etc) and eggs are quite healthy for the dog.
  • You can try preparing a mixture of ground turkey, rice and carrot for the dog. Meals containing ground beef, brown rice, brewer's yeast and carrots can also be considered.
  • Since peanuts are the only nuts that are safe for the dog, you can prepare dog biscuits by mixing peanuts, butter, biscuits, flour, bone meal, powdered milk, brewers yeast and carrots.
  • Bone meal and raw meaty bones are two dog food finest ingredients that should be added to the meals to ensure the dogs are getting enough calcium.
  • Use of oatmeal, pasta, potatoes, etc., will maintain the dog's starch requirement, and adding grind eggshells will also increase the nutrient content of the meal.
  • Some foods that can be unhealthy for the dog and should be avoided are chocolates, coffee, tea, grapes, raisins, raw eggs, nutmeg and onions.
Recipes for Homemade Dog Food

Following are some simple homemade dog food recipes that are nutritious and also easy to prepare.

Recipe 1
Ingredients
  • 2 lbs hamburger
  • 1 cup raw liver
  • 2 cups of rolled oats
  • 10 oz shrimp or lobster
  • 1 boiled potato
  • cup wheat germ
  • cup blueberries
  • cup brown rice
  • cup brewer's yeast
  • A tad of cinnamon
Directions

In a processor, add beef, boiled potato and shrimp or lobster. Crush the blueberries into a smooth paste and put into the processor. Now add the remaining ingredients and blend well. This meal has to be served fresh and raw to the dog.

Recipe 2
Ingredients
  • 8 cups oats
  • 6 cups barley
  • 3-4 bunches of broccoli (stems grated and flowerettes chopped
  • 2 cups brown rice
  • 2 lbs carrots (grated)
  • bunch parsley (chopped)
  • 6 zucchini (grated)
Directions

Cook oats separately, and brown rice and barley together in two different pots. Allow them to cool, preferably overnight. In a processor, add chopped vegetables and blend well to form a thick puree. Combine all the ingredients, make small balls and serve to the dog. You can also freeze it for future consumption.

Hence, making your own dog food requires a balanced mixture of 40% meat, 30% fiber and 30% starch. This variable can slightly change as per the dog's breed and size. Before switching to a homemade diet from processed food, it is always suggested to consult a veterinarian. Start switching by adding small amounts of homemade food to the dog's regular dry food, and as the pet gets acquainted to the taste, gradually increase the quantity.

Part of relaxing at the end of the day is kicking off your shoes and putting your hardworking feet up for a well deserved rest. As you turn to your family to talk about your day, you may notice the simple action of removing your shoes has just cleared the room, even the dog went to get some fresh air. People who dont know you well may contemplate a quick call to HAZMAT. Maybe the time has come to do something about your smelly shoes.

Shoes absorb the odor of sweaty feet all day, no wonder they are so stinky! Some shoes retain the smell more than others depending on what material the shoes are made of and how often the shoes are worn. Manmade materials tend to make the feet sweat more than natural fibers because most manmade materials are a plastic base and plastic does not allow air flow which then results in more sweating and sweat staying inside of the shoe. It's best not to wear the same shoes two days in a row. For many people that is not an option. These methods work on all shoes from soccer cleats to work boots to a pair of heels.

Scented Cat Litter Takes the Stink Out

Fill a pair of thin knee high sock or cut pantyhose off just below the knee.

Fill the hose or socks with scented cat litter.

Stuff th
e sock or pantyhose into the shoes.

Leave the deodorizers in the shoes whenever you are not wearing them.

You can also make scented cat litter sachets.

Cut 5 to 6 inch squares of cheesecloth.

Lay two pieces of cheesecloth on a flat work surface, one on top of the other.

Pour cat litter into the center of the square.

Fold the cheesecloth over and tie the top closed with string or ribbon.

Cat litter absorbs odor and dampness.

Bounce Dryer Sheets Banish Shoe Odor

Place an unused Bounce Dryer Sheet into each shoe.

Allow the dryer sheets to remain in the shoes overnight to freshen and deodorize your shoes.

Bounce Dryer Sheets can be reused nightly for several week to deodorize shoes.

Borax To The Rescue

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of Twenty Mule Team Borax into each shoe.

Allow the borax to sit overnight and dump it out in the garbage in the morning.

Borax absorbs shoe odor.

Fresh Lemon Scented Shoes and Feet

Sprinkle fresh or concentrated lemon juice on a couple of sheets of newspaper.

Crumple the newspaper and stuff it into each shoe.

Let the newspaper remain in the shoes over night.

Lemon deodorizes and leaves a fresh scent in your smelly shoes, boots or sneakers.

Charcoal Absorbs Odors

Place one to two charcoal briquettes into each sock.

Place one sock in each shoe.

Leave the odor absorbers in the shoe overnight.

White Vinegar to Kill Shoe Odor

Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle.

Mist the insides of the shoes.

White vinegar will kill odor causing bacteria and leave behind a clean, fresh scent. It only takes a few minutes for the vinegar smell to fade away.

The Old Deodorizing Standby

Sprinkle baking soda in each shoe and allow to sit overnight.

Odors fr
om shoes can be downright nauseating

All of these methods work to deodorize stinky shoes. Try them all to see what works best for you.

Always try not to wear the same shoes for several days in a row especially in hot weather or while you are working out or playing a sport.

Preserving food comes from times where gathering food was not always guaranteed. There were times when food was difficult to catch or gather, or when the environmental conditions made collecting food difficult. Over the generations we humans have developed many different ways of preserving food to allow ourselves to move around the world, and most importantly to survive. In this article we will have a look at the history of food preservation and which methods may be used today.

Food preservation's main aim is to keep the food in a state so that it can be safely consumed. The methods tend to do this by preventing deterioration of the food by micro bacteria and other organisms. In modern times food preservation is used to prevent wastage, increasing the efficiency of the food manufacturing system.

Age-old methods of preservation

Keeping the food in a cold climate

In cold climates, especially those that are freezing, food can be easily stored. When our ancestors stored food they made it efficient by cutting the food into small strips and storing it close to their shelters. This allowed them to keep food in an edible state for long periods of time. We do this today with modern freezers and fridges, which work by cooling the environment, preventing the growth of bacteria and other pathogens.

Salting the food

In many parts of the world, the temperatures would not remain low enough for food to be kept edible by keeping it cold. Therefore using salt on the food, especially things like meats, was a very good method of preserving food. The salt prevented the growth of pathogens by drawing out moisture and altering the conditions so that the pathogens could not grow.

Salt could be made by boiling seawater until the water evaporates and salt is left. By cutting meat into usable pieces, rubbing with salt and then allowing them to hang, the meat could be salted and would stay edible for many weeks or months. If there was a container available; a strong salt solution could be made and the food could be kept in the salty solution (brine) for much longer than it would naturally stay fresh.

Drying the food

Drying the food is very like salting it, but obviously without salt. By drying the food and removing most of the moisture the growth of bacteria and other pathogens will be slowed. Traditionally meat was dried in the sun and wind or over a fire. It is said that this process also concentrates the nutritional value as well as preserving it. Dried meat is defined as only containing around 5% of its original moisture content. Drying meats may take several weeks and so it is often done inside such as on meat hooks in special salting rooms.

Many of these methods of food preservation are still used today but they are now normally used to add flavour rather than for purely food preservation. Salted foods, especially hams, are delicacies in many parts of the world as are several different types of dried foods.

What is your favourite method of preserving fresh food? Do you still use any age-old methods of food preservation? Do you use these age-old methods to add flavour to your food? Please feel free to write a comment below.

Did You Know?
Dogs should never be fed on leftovers. Focus should be on high protein, meat based diet and less on vegetables as dogs lack enzymes to digest plant-based food.
Choosing the right dog food plays an important role in keeping your dog healthy and fit. Feeding the best quality dog food promotes health and increases the lifespan of your dog. It has been found that dogs fed on high quality foods, are energetic and have a shiny coat.

Dog Food Analysis

Proteins: Proteins form an indispensable part of a healthy dog diet. Proteins promote muscle growth as well as help to repair damaged muscle tissue. Canine diet lacking in proteins can lead to poor fur coat and a weakened immune system, thereby putting your pet at an increased risk of falling sick frequently. However, digestive disorders are likely to occur in dogs, if proteins are coming from plant-based sources. Proteins obtained from animal sources are considered to be the best for dog health. High quality protein is found in chicken, lamb, beef, fish, eggs and meat meals.

Although meat is an excellent source of protein, giving it in raw form is not advised as it may cause food poisoning in dogs. Raw eggs and even raw milk contain Salmonella (harmful bacteria) that could harm your dog. Hence, uncooked meat, especially eggs should not be given to dogs.

Vegetables and Fruits: Dogs find it difficult to digest raw vegetables and fruits as they have a small digestive tract and moreover their body produces very little enzymes necessary to digest plant-based foods. So, feeding steam cooked vegetables is often recommended to prevent digestion problems. However, certain vegetables and fruits must be avoided as they can trigger a wide range of health problems including diarrhea and stomach upset. They are mentioned below:

Foodstuffs Detrimental to Dog Health
  • Avocados
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Mushrooms
  • Cherry
  • Apple
  • Broccoli
  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Peach
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates in moderate amounts is a good source of energy for dogs. Too much carbs in the diet can cause obesity and symptoms of maldigestion such as bloating and gas. Approximately 20-25% of canine diet should contain carbohydrates. Dog meals containing soluble carbohydrates found in oats, barley, russet potatoes and brown rice, can be quickly digested.

There are certain factors that need to be considered before choosing a dog food. For instance, underweight or overweight dogs have different nutritional needs. Dogs with a higher activity level need more nutrition-dense foods. Dog food available in the market are classified into 3 main types. They are 'grocery store' foods, premium foods, and healthy foods.

Grocery store foods is the cheapest option to feed your dog. Although these foods may be pocket friendly, they contain ingredients which are not easily digestible. They are blended with additives and chemicals that are responsible for causing diseases like cancer. These foods fail to provide the nutrition required for the proper growth of your dog. Quality control standards are very low in these foods. As a result, in some cases, poisonous substances such as plastic, have been detected in the analysis.

On the other hand, premium foods provide high quality ingredients, but still contain certain elements such as chemical preservatives, artificial flavors and colors that can be harmful to your dog's health. Premium foods are much more costly than 'grocery store' foods, as they contain a higher grade of ingredients that are not difficult to digest and are beneficial for your dog. Premium foods are generally found in veterinary clinics and pet stores.

Healthy dog foods are often recommended by veterinarians as they contain the most nutritious ingredients. Available in any pet food market, these foods are made from the highest quality, nutrition rich foods that provide optimum health benefits for your dog. These foods are prepared using meat, fresh vegetables and grains like barley and brown rice that are rich in carbohydrates. They contain additional minerals and vitamins that provide a beautiful coat and a healthy skin to your dog. As these foods are fortified with high quality ingredients, they are expensive than other types of dog food. In short, you will have to spend more to get a healthier and a better quality dog food.

Tips for Choosing High-Quality Dog Food
  • Commercial dog food manufacturers need to follow the standards issued by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). These standards help to assess the nutrition of dog food. So, check for AAFCO stamp of approval on the label, that assures, food delivers healthy balanced nutrition. Some of the popular dog food brands that satisfy AAFCO standards of quality dog food are given below:
    • Newman's Own Organics Organic Beef and Liver
    • Orijen Adult Formula
    • Canidae Chicken Lamb and Fish
  • Dog food should be high in meat-based protein with a reasonable amount of carbohydrates. In other words, proteins derived from high-quality animal sources should be the foundation of any canine diet. This type of diet is best recommended to add years to your dog's health.
  • If you are buying a premium dog food, make sure that natural antioxidants such as rosemary and tocopherols are used as preservatives.
  • The protein requirement for every dog is different and depends upon his lifestyle and age. For instance, sled or hunting dogs are required to do tasks that are more physically demanding and so their protein needs exceed than other dog breeds. Also, certain dog food brands contain very high amount of proteins, which is not recommended for all dogs. So, consult an animal nutritionist or veterinarian to know the exact protein needs suitable for your dog.
  • Dog food ingredients are listed on the package labels. When buying healthy food for your pet, check the ingredients list and see if eggs, fish or meat are the first ingredients. In case, they are on the top of the ingredients list, then the food is a rich source of protein and is easily digestible.
Which is the Best Dog Food

On the basis of dog food analysis, it has been observed that homemade dog food is considered to be the safest for your pet. A healthy homemade dog food will give your beloved pet the much-needed nutrition, free from additives. The biggest advantage of making dog food at home is that you can check what ingredients are being fed to your dog. Dog meals made at home may include meaty stews, vegetables and healthy soups.

So if you really care for your dog, start collecting dog food recipes and keep your dog away from store-bought food. Remember, only the best quality dog food provides optimum nutrition, which is essential to keep your dog's health hale and hearty for years down the line.

The welfare of the animal adopted by the family is a collective responsibility. Just like every investment and member of the family is insured, the pet needs a finance cover too. Pet health insurance has been around for a while now, but the importance of the cover has only recently made the rounds. The availability of pet health cover plans has in a way been affected and limited largely due to the various policy restrictions and prohibitive clauses included in many cases. However, in last few decades, pet owners around the world have pursued the changes adopted within the dedicated pet insurance industry.

Importance of Insurance for Your Pet
Most pet owners react from the hassles they face when dealing with insurance red tape and problems prevalent in the human healthcare fields. The increasing cost of veterinary medicine and the responsibility of the pet are leading pet owners across the globe to address the need for dedicated insurance. The cover basically takes care of animal hospitalization and healthcare needs are addressed by the veterinary.

The pet owners are responsible for veterinary costs incurred, like preventive or routine pet care, emergencies and conditions that require hospitalization. The policies of health cover provided for pets are quite similar to human insurance policies. It also involves the payment of annual or semi annual premiums, calculating deductibles and evaluating the different coverage plans based on budget and specific terms and conditions. In the case of animals, the health coverage plans are based on the species, the pets' age and any preexisting health conditions. In certain policies, the lifestyle of the pet, which needs to be declared as indoors or outdoors, is also considered. Most companies offer policies to animals that have completed a certain number of months since birth. There are some that do not follow the 'age limit' criteria at all and yet some others who actually design policies and plans for pets aged between those specified by the company only.

Qualification Criteria
The various insurance companies seek information on preexisting health problems. Policies differ form one company to another and in type. Some companies insure the animal only if the pet is veterinary declared 'stable' or 'controlled'. There are policies where companies refuse to insure animals with existent health conditions or terminally ill. The animal, in some programs are not covered if the breed is understood as prone to developing certain diseases. A good example of this is the common health hazard in German Shepherds: Hip dysplasia!

Working of Pet Health Insurance
Here, there is a fixed current average for annual deductibles. The actual costs of the policies vary widely. The affecting factors include the animal species and the different packages designed with the species in mind, from which the owner can choose. There are healthcare packages that include annual checkups and vaccinations and preventive medication, along with routine visits to the veterinary. The comprehensive-insurance packages for the animals also cover spay and/or neuter surgeries. Almost all of these plans cover accident and illness and offer immediate coverage, literally within a month, in the case of illness claims on new policies. If you have more than one pet, then additional pets are offered coverage plans at a reduced rate.

You need to check with your veterinarian about the wellness packages offered by certain hospitals, at discounted prices and the geriatric checkup packages. Comparison shopping for premium rates and maximum coverage helps you save on precious time and money!

Flies are more than just pesky, buzzing insects, they are dirty, disease carrying hazards. Flies carry bacteria, viral and parasitic infections to their human or animal hosts. Flies just by the nature of where they are born, where they live and where they feed are covered in bacteria that causes illness such as pink eye, dysentery, intestinal virus or more ominous diseases such as Typhoid or cholera. Many types of flies bite, a particularly painful bite comes from a horse fly, a very itchy bite comes from sand flies and house flies can bite and leave large, itchy, red welts behind.Controlling the fly population in and around your house is important to the health and safety to those that live in and visit your home.

There are quite a few commercially available fly repellants and insecticides, but most a laced with harmful chemicals. Making a decision to fight these flying pests responsibly is the first step in getting rid of them.

Take Away Their Food Supply and Living Areas

Always cover garbage cans.

Never leave food lying around.

Clean up quickly after pets so flies don't have access to breeding grounds or feeding grounds. These preventative measures will help to reduce the number of flies, but not eliminate them.

Natural Fly Control

There are a few other steps to take to control these pests. Nature has provided us with natural fly repellents. Use these repellents through the year to repel flies.

Chop up fresh mint leaves.

Place the chopped mint leaves onto a 3-inch squares of cheesecloth or nylon netting.

Tie the ends up tightly.

Hang the mint sachets around pools, patios and decks.

These are especially useful and safe to use around outdoor tables when having an barbeque to keep the flies off the food.

Fly Repelling Plants

Plant sweet basil plants in patio containers.

Place the containers around your patio and deck to repel flies.

Break off sweet basil leaves, wash them and use them as garnish food during an outdoor barbeque. For best results slightly crush the leaves or rip them to release the fly repelling oils.

Essential Oils

Use lavender essential oil or peppermint essential oil to keep flies away.

Place a few drops of either on a cotton ball.

Place the cotton balls in the bottom of garbage cans and place them around patio tables and chairs.

Essential oils are available in natural pharmacies, health food stores and online.

More Plants to Rid Flies

Plant lemongrass in the ground or in patio containers around outdoor entertaining areas. You can even break off a few pieces of lemongrass and use it in vases or as decorations to repel flies.

Plant Mexican Marigolds in hanging outdoor planters to deter flies. This method is both decorative and useful.

Pet Tips

If you don't want to clean up immediately after your pets, keep diatomaceous earth handy and generously sprinkle it on any stray piles of dog poop. Flies will not land on it and lay eggs because the diatomaceous earth provides a hostile breeding ground and the eggs will not survive.

Hobo Dinners are something that I grew up on, and my kids love today. It's simple to make, and tastes so good. The amount of ingredients you need will depend on how many people you are cooking for.

Ingredients

Ground Beef

Carrots

Onions

Potatoes

Salt & Pepper to taste

You will need Tin foil.

Preheatoven to 350 F. Tear sections of tin foil into squares large enough to fold over a hamburger pattywith toppings. Pat out the hamburger patties and place each one on a section offoil. Chop up carrots, onions, and potatoes and add to each patty. Salt and pepper to taste. Close tin foil, and bake in the oven for about one hour. These are great right out of the oven, but my kids choose to eat it with ketchup.

taco
Taco's are another way to cook ground beef, and is something most kids love. There are a variety ofways to prepare taco's. First decide if you want hard shells or soft shells. Then brown the beef in a skillet until no longer pink and cook thoroughly. Add taco seasoning to the meat and follow the directions on the package for how much water to add and how to cook. When finished, place the meat into the shells. Toppings depend on your preference, and include tomato, onion, bell pepper, jalapeo, sour cream, cheese, salsa, avocado, lettuce, beans, and sauce.

Heat large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium high heat. Cook patties about six minutes or until browned, turning after three minutes. Remove from pan and keep warm. Stir in water and remaining ingredients. Bring to boil and add patties. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for ten minutes.
