Are you swatting at house flies, before you even sit down for dinner? If so, you may have a house fly infestation. Before you panic, you can fight back! Here are some tips for getting rid of house flies.

Before we get started, yes you can use chemical sprays that may work, but this way you are introducing toxic chemicals into your home, something you may want to reconsider if you have small children or anyone with breathing problems or health problems.

Getting rid of house flies does not have to involve chemicals if you get after them before they get that large a colony! You basically have to make your house unattractive to the house flies. They need to eat all the time, and need a warm decomposing area to lay their eggs, such as food garbage, and decomposing material in the yard, such as dog waste. If this is available to them, then your house will become the next hangout!

Cloves

Flies hate the smell of cloves. So to get rid of house flies, try this method. Take a sweet apple and then stick cloves in the apple. Not only is this a cute decoration but it is a great way to get rid of house flies. Put one of these in each room. It will smell like you have been baking, but is one way to get rid of house flies. Replace as needed. This is a fairly cheap solution, and a great air freshener.

Entrances

Find out where these flies are getting in. Start with the easy ways which is most likely your screens. It only takes a tiny hole for a fly to get in. So, take a bottle of clear nail polish and dab it on the small holes in your screens. This is a good stop measure until you can replace the screen or get it fixed.

Check out your basement. Have someone go around the outside of your basement foundation with a flashlight and shine between the siding and the foundation. If you see a stream of light, then this is a way for them to get in. They are attracted to food especially spoiling food and will look for any easy way into your house. Use a caulking gun and fill in the gaps, this is a great way to get rid of house flies. Actually this works for spiders and mice as well. It only takes a tiny crack to be invaded by pests! This will also help with your heating and cooling bills!

Check any outside vents. Sometimes around the vents, are gaps that you can use your caulking gun to fill. This is a common spot for house flies, spiders and mice to get in.

Garbage

Don't leave garbage too close to the house, as this is where they will lay eggs. If you have this too close to the house, then every time someone opens the door, in will go flies. They will gravitate to the kitchen or where food is, which is not healthy as they do carry germs. So, keep the garbage in the kitchen emptied, and put your containers well away from the house, in closed containers to stop them from laying eggs.

Clean up crumbs and any food messes in the kitchen right away, as they are attracted to food, get rid of their food source and this will get rid of house flies. Don't leave a bowl of sugar out on the counter either, as they will walk through that and it is a source of food for them.

Dog Doo Doo

Another way to get rid of house flies, is to keep the yard clear of your dogs business. Flies will swarm on this in the warmer months, and it is not that big a step to the dog, and then into the house.

So, now that you have closed up the entrances, fixed the holes in the screen, moved the garbage, cleaned the kitchen, picked up the yard, and put out clove apples. You have now stopped them from coming in, or at least put them off with the cloves and clean house.

Next you need to deal with the ones that are in there now. You can go around on a swatting raid, which works. But here is another way that works well too.

In the early evening, as it gets dark or if it is warm in the house, you will notice that the house flies will tend to hang out on the ceiling. Instead of trying to swat them on the ceiling and make a mess, especially on a popcorn ceiling, try this trick a friend told me, for getting rid of house flies, especially off the ceiling.

Take a cup of water and mix some dish soap in it to form a froth on top. Then get a stool or small step ladder and quietly place the cup over the fly. It will try to fly away and fall in the suds. You can just keep going to all the other flies, and then throw the liquid outside!

I didn't think this would work to get rid of house flies, but it does! I found in the evening, the flies were not as quick to fly away on the ceiling. This way you are not trying to swat flies on the ceiling, and then going around trying to find the bodies!

You can win the war on getting rid of house flies. One other point, is to make sure no one is leaving empty cereal bowls, or yogurt cups for example in the TV room, or in their bedroom, this will attract house flies for sure. It doesn't take much, to attract a house fly, so to get rid of house flies, you need to put them off using your home. So, you need to get your whole family on board with this fight against the house flies. Everyone has to clean up their dishes and any food scraps.

Dogs have a way of becoming a part of our lives. We tend to become so attached to our dogs that we do not just consider them as pets, but as our babies. But what if we fall ill and unknowingly pass on the illness to our dear pets? On a serious note, do we actually pass along any disease symptoms to our pets? It's worth finding out the answers to these questions for the good health of your pet.

Common cold is one of the most common ailments that humans seem to catch at least twice a year. We begin to maintain a distance from our loved ones, fearing we may pass on our cold to them. But, how do we keep our dog away, who is bound to pounce on us the minute he sees us?

Can Humans Spread Colds to Dogs?
You may have heard of certain diseases that are spread from animals to humans. These include the nasty H1N1 virus that had managed to cause a 'bird flu' pandemic around the world. And recently, you may have heard a lot about the unfortunate deaths of many people around the world due to 'swine flu'. Both these respiratory diseases were said to have been passed on from animals to humans. This probably makes one wonder, if it is possible for dogs to get colds from humans.

Pets can transfer certain diseases and parasites like rabies, ringworm and intestinal parasites to humans. But, when it comes to humans, they do not transfer a cold virus or bacteria to humans. This means, if you catch a cold or flu, it cannot be transmitted to dogs. And similarly, when a dog catches a cold or flu, it is highly unlikely that it will spread to humans. The reason being that the cold and flu causing viral and bacterial agents for humans and dogs are different. These infection causing germs therefore are unable to cause colds in dogs when transmitted from humans and vice versa.

Most of these respiratory illnesses are specific-specific in nature. This means that a dog can spread his cold germs only to a dog and a human will spread cold only to humans. Thus, if you have caught a cold, just relax. Your dog will not catch a cold from you. It should, however be noted, that certain Streptococcus species may infect both humans, dogs as well as cats. These bacteria are the ones that cause sore throat. Many dogs and cats are carriers of Group A Streptococcus and never exhibit symptoms of an infection. These pets are able to transmit the bacteria to humans, leading to an infection. However, if you suffer from Strep throat, the illness will not be transmitted to your pet.

Causes of Colds in Dogs
Dogs definitely get cold, but, the agents causing colds in dogs are different from those in humans. Hence there is no transmission of cold from humans to dogs or the other way round. Colds in dogs are caused by various viral and bacterial agents. The organisms that cause colds in dogs are:
  • Adenovirus Type 2
  • Canine Influenza Virus
  • Distemper
  • Kennel Cough (caused by viruses Adenovirus or Coronavirus and mostly by bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica)
  • Parainfluenza Virus
Cold Symptoms in Dogs
Although the causes of colds in dogs differ from humans, the symptoms are more or less the same. The cold symptoms in dogs include:
  • Chronic cough
  • Runny nose
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Continuous sneezing
  • Hacking cough with phlegm
  • Greenish yellow nasal discharge
  • Watery eyes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Sleepiness
  • Fever
How to Cure a Dog Cold?
If you are wondering how to cure a dog's cold, the treatment methods are very simple. Similar to human cold, most of the dog colds are self-limiting. After about 2 to 4 days, the symptoms begin to subside. However, if the dog shows high fever and severe symptoms of cold, you should seek medical help. Generally, a dog is required to be kept in a warm and dry place. Give him a nice, comfortable bed to sleep in with a warm blanket. The dog may lose his appetite, but you have to gently coax him to eat. Feed the dog with boiled chicken, some rice and chicken broth. Give the dog plenty of clean and fresh water to drink. This will help keep the dog hydrated and flush out the toxins and infectious agents from his body. Apart from that, you can place a mint flavored vaporizer near the dog, while he sleeps. The steam will moisten the bronchial passages and allow the dog to breathe easy. The veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics in case of bacterial infection. The veterinarian may also suggest multivitamin supplements containing vitamins A, C and E to help strengthen the immune system of the dog.

Dogs cannot get an infection from humans and humans cannot catch a cold from dogs. You can safely sneeze when your dog is around as it won't get transmitted to the dog. However, show some caution around puppies, older dogs and dogs with a weak immune system. Hope the above information has helped you learn that dogs cannot get sick due to human respiratory infections.

Disclaimer This article is for informational purposes only and should not be used as a replacement for expert medical advice. Visiting the veterinarian is the safest way to diagnose and treat any/all health conditions.

For a pet owner (let that be any kind of pets, not just dogs), it is highly important to take proper care of their beloved pets. So whenever they are under the weather, it is natural to feel sad and concerned. Now I don't wish to scare you or anything because frankly, we need to get to the answers of whether puppy hiccups are normal/common or not. The answer to that is - yes, hiccups are quite normal. In fact, all animals including humans and puppies can develop hiccups. Similar to human hiccups, for animals, hiccups are harmless. Occasional hiccups should not be a matter of concern because of its normality. Your puppy is growing rapidly and so are his/her insides as there are many development stages, which could be one of the reasons for the hiccups.

What Causes the Hiccups?

What causes the hiccups? Hiccups may occur due to spasm or involuntary contraction in the diaphragm. What happens is that the intake of oxygen is restricted or blocked all of a sudden due to the glottis being closed. The hiccup can be caused when there is an interruption in the rhythm of the breathing process. Another reason for hiccups is the occurrence after eating food or drinking water too quickly, nervousness, sudden fright, or at times, minor gastrointestinal problem. Basically, it is self-treated after some time. However, extended episodes of hiccups can be signal of some severe illness and may call for a visit to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

Stop the Hiccups

In this following section, we will be giving you some easy steps that can be tried at home if the hiccups occur. However, if you notice that these hiccups are coming about too often, too soon, then don't waste any time in visiting the veterinarian. And now, we will go over the steps on how to get rid of the hiccups if time doesn't take care of it. The basic idea to cure puppy hiccup is to get the breathing process synchronized and resting to the diaphragm.

Step 1:Talk your puppy for an energetic walk, run, or play with him/her (keep the puppy jumping and moving). This will change the breathing pattern and relax the diaphragm. While running or playing, make quick starts and stops, which will in turn relax the diaphragm, as your puppy is starving for oxygen.

Step 2: Give your puppy his/her favorite treat and something to drink (milk or water). The process of eating a meal or snack and drinking water may temporarily change the breathing pattern and can also get rid of hiccups.

Step 3: Try to startle your puppy. Shock techniques or sudden startle have worked for many people in curing their hiccups, perhaps it may do so for your puppy as well. The element of surprise can lead to getting rid of the hiccups. Although, try not to scare them too often as this behavior tends to make them not trust you. Once is more than enough to understand if the method will work for the hiccups or not.

Step 4: Another reason for your puppy to suffer from hiccups could be stress. Yes, even animals have stress, which is why the hiccups keep coming back. Help your puppy relax and do whatever that it takes to get him/her to relax. If your puppy enjoys a bath, give him/her a relaxing slow bath. Or perhaps he/she likes you sitting close by and pet him/her. Do anything and everything that's possible to make him/her feel at ease.

In the beginning of the article, we briefly mentioned the different development stages of a puppy. So if you wish to get more information on the same, read the article on development stages of a puppy. If this is your first puppy, there may be chances that you could be freaking out due to the hiccups. There's no need to worry too much, as you just learned how normal they are for humans and for animals. These were some of the remedies or suggestions. If the hiccups last longer than half an hour or sound like coughing and gagging, contact a veterinarian immediately.

What will you do when you feel hot? You may drink lots of water, take off your heavy clothes and wear light ones instead, and do everything you can to beat the heat. But the most important natural mechanism that helps you to fight the heat is your ability to sweat. Sweating produces moisture on the surface of the skin, and the skin cools as this moisture evaporates. This is the mechanism that helps humans to lose excess heat from their body. Such a mechanism does not exist in the body of a dog. Panting, which is a common feature in dogs, is related to their technique of beating the heat.

Sweating in Dogs

As mentioned earlier, dogs do not sweat like humans do. Unlike humans, dogs have very few sweat glands, and most of these glands are located along the base of their feet. Imagine the amount of sweat which can be released through these few sweat glands, as it is almost impossible for them to sweat through their fur. The little amount of sweat released, actually results in generating more body heat in dogs. This can be the reason behind the death of dogs inside hot cars. They get hotter and release some sweat which generates more body heat. They release this heat eventually heating up the whole confined space, leading to their death. Owners of pet dogs must avoid such circumstances which can be detrimental for their dog's health. In short, as in the case of humans, dogs do not have an amazing body mechanism to combat excess body heat. Then how do they manage to beat the heat? Dogs lose the excess body heat by panting, as these animals really cannot tolerate high temperatures.

Why Do Dogs Pant

You may not come across a sweating dog even once in your entire life. This is because these animals don't sweat like humans. But a panting dog is a very common sight, as even a resting dog may pant. Actually, panting is the technique they use to beat the heat and cool their body. Panting is very easy for dogs, as it needs very little energy and does not make the animal feel hotter. This is because of the elasticity of the lungs and air passages. Panting helps dogs to regulate their body temperature. The normal body temperature of dogs is between 101 -102 F (38 - 39 C). A slight hike (of around five degrees) in this temperature level may lead to a heat stroke in the dog. Hence, monitoring slight changes in their behavior should be a part of dog care.

Usually, dogs pant with their tongues hanging out, and this posture helps them release excess body heat. Apart from cooling the mouth and the tongue, this posture also helps these animals to cool the blood vessels of the head. This process protects their brain from over heating and also provides circulation of cooler blood to other body parts. The tongue plays an important role in this process, as the surface area of the tongue facilitates evaporation, which in turn helps the dogs to cool off. This explains why do dogs pant with their tongues lolling.

Panting of dogs is normal more during hot climates or after heavy exercise and running. But if you have a pet dog, you must monitor heavy panting of your dog that happens without any reason. It can be a symptom of a heatstroke, which may also cause a dry mouth and nose, abnormal breathing and heart rate, seizures, pale or dark gums, etc. In such cases, immediate medical attention is needed, and meanwhile you can make the dog feel cool by giving cool water to drink and applying ice packs beneath the legs. Make sure that you are not covering the dog, as it can trap the heat and cause more trouble. Now you know the reason behind why do dogs pant. It is very much normal, but any abnormal symptoms should be monitored, as some other dog health problems too can be the reason behind the heavy panting.

One of the leading causes of death in dogs is canine liver diseases. Liver is a vital organ that performs a number of essential functions. The main function of liver is detoxification of the blood, removal of waste products from the system and secrete bile to help digestion. Liver also helps to carry out various biochemical processes, also helps the immune system fight diseases. As you can see, liver diseases tend to cripple most of the body functions, as the organ is no longer able to perform to its optimum capacity. It is important to spot dog liver disease symptoms as early as possible. This is because early treatment will ensure the liver has a chance to overcome any disease and perform its functions well.

Causes of Dog Liver Disease

There are several causes that lead to liver disease in dogs. Some of the most common causes of liver disease in dogs include:
  • Infection due to bacterial, viral or parasitic agents like leptospirosis, hepatitis and heartworms.
  • Toxic hepatopathy in dogs due to liver damage by exposure to drugs, chemicals, toxins like corticosteroids, aspirin or poisoning.
  • Liver cancer
  • Congenital or acquired liver shunts
  • Trauma due to a severe blunt blow to the abdomen like during a car accident
  • Pancreatitis causing inflammation from the pancreas to spread to the liver
  • Hemolytic anemia that causes decrease in oxygen supply to liver cells
  • Liver cirrhosis due to copper storage disease, chronic hepatitis, anti-seizure medications, etc.
Symptoms of Dog Liver Disease

Canine liver disease is one of the top most killers of dogs, because it remains undetected during the early stages. Liver has the ability to regenerate and thus, symptoms that appear are very subtle. Thus, only those dogs who are taken to a vet regularly, are diagnosed with liver diseases in their initial stages. By the time canine liver disease symptoms are more prominent, the disease has already set in, and the liver function has reduced. Some of the symptoms of dog liver disease are as follows:

Gastrointestinal Symptoms
The first indication of liver disease in dogs is loss of appetite, that is, anorexia. The dog starts eating less than what it normally does. Along with loss of appetite, the dog shows signs of gastrointestinal upsets like diarrhea, vomiting, and even constipation at times. This occurs due to improper metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fat due to liver malfunction. Weight loss adds to the woes of the dog. As the dog suffers from other metabolic malfunctioning, he suffers from anemia. Thus, becomes very weak and becomes inactive and lethargic.

Neurological Changes
The high levels of toxins circulating in the body causes a number of neurological as well as behavioral changes in the dog. As the liver is unable to filter them out of the bloodstream, it causes them to accumulate in the brain. This leads to hepatic encephalopathy. Thus, leading to a number of behavioral changes like aggressiveness, disorientation, restlessness, circulating, stupor, head pressing, seizures, excessive drooling, staggering, ataxia, mental dullness, aimless wandering and in severe cases coma.

Jaundice
When secretion of bile from the gallbladder is obstructed, it leads to accumulation of toxic bilirubin in bloodstream. This leads to jaundice in dogs also referred to as 'icterus'. This causes the whites of the dogs eyes, as well as the mucous membranes of the tongue and gums, to turn yellow. The dog starts passing a bright yellow-orange colored urine due to bilirubinuria.

Stool Color
The color of the stools passed by the dog changes to pale gray colored feces. The bile secreted contains electrolytes, cholesterol, bile acids, bilirubin as well as globulins. It is very important for removal of drugs, absorption of fat from the intestine into the bloodstream, as well as recirculation of red blood cells. Bilirubin is a toxic substance that is detoxified in the liver and excreted. But, when the liver fails to detoxify and excrete bilirubin from the system, it results in the dog passing pale gray stools. Thus, indicating complete obstruction of the bile ducts due to liver disease.

Bleeding Disorders
Liver disease causes coagulation problems in the animal. This condition is called coagulopathy. When a dog suffers from a liver disease, it affects its stomach and duodenum. Thus, the dog suffers from gastrointestinal hemorrhage and owners spot blood in dog's stool. Sometimes, blood is spotted in dog's urine as well as vomits.

Skin Disorders
The toxins accumulated in the body also affect the dogs skin to a great extent. When one observes skin disorders called hepatocutaneous syndrome in dogs, it indicates an advanced liver disease. The dog develops ulcerated, crusted sores on the footpads. He suffers from foot pain and will have problems walking or getting up. The feet become itchy and one observes erythema (redness) between the toes. One may even observe sores and lesions on the ear flaps, oral mucosa, eyes and elbows.

Other Symptoms
Apart from the above symptoms one may even observe:
  • Swollen belly (ascites)
  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive urination
  • Enlarged liver
  • Bad breath
Treatment for Dog Liver Disease

Once the veterinarian suspects liver diseases, he will conduct a series of tests. These test include blood test, bile acid response, X-rays and ultrasound examination. The results will show the type and severity of the liver disease in dogs. The dog liver disease treatment depends on the cause of the condition. In case of bacterial infection, the dog will be give antibiotics. If medications or supplements lead to liver damage, they will be changed. The dog may be given antifibrotic agents like colchicine to treat liver cirrhosis. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed in case of liver inflammation and immunosuppressive drugs like azathioprine may also be given. Dogs with cancer may be administered chemotherapeutic drugs that fight cancer.

Apart from medications, the doctor will also suggest a change in the dog's diet. The amount of vitamins, carbohydrates, fat, minerals or proteins given to the dog will be adjusted. Natural herbs like milk thistle and burdock help in protecting the liver from toxic substances, and helps it rejuvenate itself. Canine liver disease may also be associated with other diseases like diabetes, heart problems or cancer. Thus, these issues also may have to be addressed while treating dog liver disease.

Dog liver disease symptoms generally begin with loss of appetite and weight loss. Soon, you may observe the dog drinks more water than usual and urinates just as often. The urine passed is often orange or dark in color. Diarrhea and vomiting are intermittently recurrent and the color of the stools passed is often light gray in color. Jaundice is another classic sign of canine liver disease. One should always be alert regarding these symptoms. A little knowledge will help you save your dog's life. Make sure you take your dog for regular health check ups. This will ensure any health condition will be detected before it turns into a complication.

Globulin is a type of blood plasma protein, and it is a crucial element of the immune system of both humans as well as dogs. Globulin is one of the three types of blood plasma protein, the other two being albumen and fibrinogen. Around 38% of the blood plasma is made up of globulin, which is secreted by the immune system. Globulin is synthesized by the white blood cells and is one of the major components that strengthen the immune system, and as a result, the entire body system of a dog. Globulin is classified into several groups on the basis of its functions. These groups include, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta, and gamma globulin. These groups of globulin perform various functions like blood clotting, transportation of nutrients, combining antigens and antibodies, and prevention from infections and inflammations. Hence, one can say that the globulin levels in dogs is a crucial factor that affects their health and well-being. In the following sections of the article, we will be focusing on the rise and fall in globulin levels, and its effects on a dog's health.

Functions of Globulin in Dogs

Gamma globulin, which is also called immunoglobulin, is naturally produced by the immune system. However, it is important to understand that gamma globulin is also produced as a reaction of certain antigens and the substances that trigger the immune response. These types of globulin are found in the blood and other body fluids like spinal fluid, urine, and some organs like the spleen and lymph nodes. There are various types of immunoglobulin like IgA, IgE, IgM, IgG, etc. All these types of immunoglobulin perform various functions like prevention of various bacterial and viral infections that attack the mucous membrane, and creating components like serotonin and histamine that prevent various types of food and skin allergies. All in all, immunoglobulin is an extremely crucial component for the proper functioning of a dog's immune system. They also act as a protective shield against various types of toxins, including snake venom. The exact profile of various types of globulin is determined with the help of a blood and urine test, which is performed by the veterinarian. Increased levels of total proteins in the dog is an indication or possibility of increased levels of globulin too.

Normal Levels

There is a slight difference between normal and healthy levels. A healthy dog raised on highly nutritious dog food has healthy blood reports with ideal profiles of all the blood components. Globulin is measured in grams per deciliter (g/dL). In a healthy dog, the average levels are around 2.1 g/dL to 3.7 g/dL. This is the case of a very healthy dog. Normally, an average dog with relatively good health, should have levels around 2.6 g/dL to 4.0 g/dL. In order to count the amount of globulin in the body, the veterinarian has to know the levels of the total proteins of the dog. A normal dog has around 5.5 g/dL to 7.5 g/dL. It is also important to understand that 0.9 g/dL to 4.0 g/dL is supposed to be a normal range of globulin in dogs. As I previously mentioned, any elevation or reduction in the normal levels is an indication of a variety of diseases and health problems in the dog. A blood plasma and urine test is the most reliable measure that the vets use for determination of the exact levels, the causes behind it, and the path of treatment that they must work on thereafter.

High Levels

The increase or decrease in the normal globulin count is not a good sign for your canine friend. There are a few things that may cause health problems in the dog, that also increase their total globulin levels. Some of the most common causes include, various kinds of allergies like food and skin allergies, several types of arthritis, diabetes, liver disease, blood disorders, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, blood cancer, etc. According to many experts, elevated stress levels and dehydration may also cause elevation of the globulin levels. This rise in levels could be diagnosed at the time of a routine checkup or when the dog shows some symptoms and signs like weakness, dehydration, indigestion, recurrent infections, food allergies and skin diseases. Upon observing such signs, you must take your dog to the vet, for the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Low Levels

Low globulin levels is an equally severe health condition for your canine friend. When the blood plasma test of the dog shows low levels of total protein and globulin, it is definitely an indication of a weak immune system, and diseases and disorders that are caused by the same. It is also an indication of a problematic situation of the important antibodies and infections that are caused by various bacteria and immunodeficiency viruses. Low levels are responsible for a weaker immune system, which makes the dogs prone to a numerous types of diseases and disorders. Dogs that have low globulin levels show some of the aforementioned health conditions. They also show some other symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, slow progress in the healing process of wounds, and various illnesses, etc. Such signs should not be overlooked, and proper treatment should be provided to the dog.

The path of treatment totally depends on the medical conditions that are responsible for the same. The primary disease is treated with proper medications, which may slowly make the globulin levels settle to normal. Constant follow-up and blood plasma tests are also needed to keep a track on the progression rate of the dog's health.

The pug dog is distinctly characterized by its wrinkly face. It is also commonly referred to as a toy dog because of its small size. It has a well-developed, short, and square body. Pugs possess strong and sturdy pairs of legs. They come in an assortment of colors from brown, fawn, silver and even black. Their coats are covered with a glossy sheen. Other distinguishing features of the pug are its ears and tail. Its ears can be classified either as rose ears, which are very small and folded back against the side of the head, or button ears, slightly bigger than rose ears, but still folding forward toward the head. The tail is also referred to as a corkscrew tail, and it is short and twists back over the hip. Pug dogs were native to China, but were introduced into Europe around the 16th century, and became very popular all over the continent, especially in England and Italy.

The pug has also been a member of the American Kennel Club Toy Group for more than a hundred years. Being diminutive makes them utterly cute and delightful, hence people, especially those living in apartments and have space constraints, opt for pugs as pets, since they are not overly messy and do not require a whole lot of exercise and training. So before you set out to get a pug pup from the nearby pet shop, read up on these health issues faced by pugs, so you will be better equipped to deal with any problem that may arise.

Pug Dog Health Concerns
Although considered to be a fairly healthy dog which can live up to 10 years and sometimes well into its teens, there are certain health problems a pug faces, as described below.

Skin Problems
Due to the highly wrinkled nature of the skin on its face, the pug can become prone to skin infections which can arise between its numerous folds. Pet owners should take extra care to clean the folds of the skin on a regular basis to get rid of any disease-causing germs, and promptly take the pug to a vet at the first sign of a skin infection.

Eye Problems
Eye problems also arise in part due to the shape of the pug's face which is pushed up and devoid of prominent snouts. Proptosis, which can cause irregular bulging of the eyes, and entropion, which causes the lower eyelid to fold inward are common eye infections a pug may face. Entropion, if it goes unchecked, may lead to irritation in the cornea because of the eyelid constantly rubbing over it, and the cornea might get damaged permanently, blinding the pug, if proper care is not taken.

Ear Problems
Pugs are prone to ear infections, and as an owner, you should diligently clean the pug's ears with an ear wash. Symptoms of ear infection include discharge, redness, and foul odor emanating from the ears, and the pug may shake his head violently if it is in pain. If you notice any of these signs, it's time to make an appointment with the vet.

Obesity
Pugs can eat a lot, much more than what they ideally should, hence you may find your pug becoming overweight. This problem is easy to solve, do not overfeed your pet! If you can feel your pet's ribs and are able to view the waist clearly, then the pug is not obese. Regular exercise and a controlled diet are just the things needed to overcome this problem.

Breathing Problems
With a scrunched up face, a small snout, and bunched-up respiratory passageways, pugs may find it difficult to breathe especially if the weather is too hot and muggy. Take care to see that the pug does not overheat and its body temperature does not exceed 105 F. If this happens, immediately place the pug in a cool, well-ventilated area so it can cool down instantly.

A pug has an unusually long roof of the mouth, which is a commonly seen attribute in short-snouted dogs. Because of this, pugs suffer from what is known as backward sneezing. When that happens, a pug unknowingly breathes rapidly and it may look like it is short of breath. It can happen if the pug is overly excited about something, or if something is stuck beneath the palate which can obstruct the breathing. This is not a serious health concern, and most dogs suffer from it quite frequently. To ease your pug's discomfort, lightly rub his throat or pinch its nostrils until the breathing returns to normal.

Skeletal Problems
Hemivertebrae is a common spinal problem seen in a large number of pugs. If it occurs in the spinal cord, it can cause paralysis in the hind limbs. This is a serious condition, and the pug may have to undergo surgery to rectify the disorder.

The other commonly seen ailment is hip dysplasia. It is characterized by an unusual formation in the hip socket, causing the joints to wear out faster than usual, and in the long run some dogs may eventually suffer from severe joint pain and even arthritis.

Some pugs may also suffer from patellar luxation, a genetic defect where the patella, or kneecap gets dislocated, coming out of its usual position. In severe cases if the animal is in pain and unable to walk, surgery may have to be performed.

Pug Encephalitis
A life-threatening condition, encephalitis, also known as necrotizing meningoencephalitis, causes inflammation of the brain and the membranes surrounding it. Almost all pugs who inherit this deadly disease succumb to it, and some may have to be euthanized which will end their suffering. As this disease is believed to be inherited genetically, it would be wise to inquire with the breeder/seller of the pug you intend to buy whether any of its ancestors have ever suffered from this fatal disease.

General Upkeep
Some common things to keep in mind while taking care of your pug is to clean their teeth regularly. This is slightly tricky since pugs have such a small face. The teeth may appear uneven, but do it without fail to prevent the buildup of tartar. Allowing your dog to chew on bones will keep plaque and tartar at bay. Trim their nails regularly. Take your pug to the vet for checkups on a regular basis. Always buy a pup from a reputed pet shop or breeder, which will ensure that the newest member of your family is not prone to any sickness.

Pugs do not necessarily make good watchdogs, but they are terrific companions. Extremely social and fun-loving, they can be easily trained, and exhibit a loving disposition. So if and when you get a pug home, take very good care of it, and you will be the proud owner of a wonderful breed of dog that will truly be your friend for life.

Dogs are man's best friend. Our quadrupedal friends are plagued by diseases and illness just like their bipedal masters. You will be even more surprised to know that canine health problems are similar to illnesses suffered by humans. For example, dogs too suffer from diabetes, arthritis, depression and even worms.

Canine Health Record
Just as we keep a record of all the illnesses suffered by our children, we need to keep a canine health record too. Each and every canine health problem has specific signs and symptoms. If you have a keen observation of the pup's or dog's behavior, it will be very easy to detect any major dog illnesses. As an owner, keep a canine health record containing the following canine health information:
  • Ears: The ears should be clean and free from any mites, wax or discharge. Keep an eye for matted hair in the ears.
  • Eyes: The eyes should be bright, expressive, sparkling with no abnormal signs of veins, ulcers, sores or discharge.
  • Mouth: The mouth of your canine friend should be pink, healthy with no dental problems. The teeth should be white with no abnormal discoloring.
  • Head: The head should have no sore patches, hair loss or wounds.
  • Skin: The skin should feel like elastic with no rashes or redness.
  • Trunk: There should be no sore patches, wounds or hair loss on the trunk.
  • Limbs: Similar to the head and truck, you should check out for unusual hair loss, sore patches and wounds.
  • Languor: If the dog looks shows unusual lack of energy, interest and inactivity, it may be due to several canine health problems or old age.
  • Limping: If your dog is limping or having any trouble moving, locate the painful area with a firm hand. Visit the doctor for a specific treatment.
  • Breathing: Gasping for air, heavy breathing or irregular breathing should be noted and informed to the veterinarian.
  • Behavior: Any change or deviation from normal dog behavior is an indication of dog illness plaguing your pet.
  • Vomiting: Unusual and frequent vomiting is a sign of many underlying causes.
  • Appetite: Sudden loss of appetite can indicate illness or disease affecting the dog.
  • Urination and Diarrhea: Frequent or irregular urination is also a symptom of many diseases. Keep a note of the stools due to diarrhea whether it is bloody, loose, etc. In female dogs, note any virginal discharge that is unusual.
The above canine health record will help you maintain canine health care in a better way. There are many canine health issues that need to be dealt with patiently and promptly.

Few Common Canine Health Problems
  • Dog abscess
  • Dog acne
  • Deafness in dogs
  • Canine diabetes
  • Heartworm in dogs
  • Dog ear problems
  • Dog allergies
  • Infectious hepatitis in dogs
  • Dog obesity
  • Dog hip dyspepsia
  • Dog arthritis
  • Ringworm infection
  • Coughing in dogs
  • Cataract
  • Asthma in dogs
  • Dog anemia
  • Dog insomnia
  • Dog hair loss
  • Dog pink eye
  • Ulcers in dogs
These are a few canine health concerns that affect your four-legged friends. There are many serious canine health issues like dog cancer affecting lungs, mouth, breast, bone. The dog may also suffer from seizures, prostate problems, lipomas, mast cell tumors, canine lupus, autoimmune disease etc. Thus, it is very important not to take any signs and symptoms lightly. You never know which serious canine health issue troubles your pet.

Canine Health Care
There are certain problems that affect specific dog breeds, type or race of dogs. Therefore, it is necessary to gather all the information regarding the various ailments that can be matter of concern for your dog. There are various canine vaccinations available for dogs and puppies that safeguard your pet from potential diseases.

Just as a parent you trust your instincts regarding every cough and sneeze of your child, follow the same rule for your pet. Most pet owners treat their canine friends as one of their family. Therefore be alert regarding the dog health problems, just as you would for other family members. Visit the veterinarian regularly and speak to him about any doubts you have regarding your dog's health. Do not take health problems lightly. It is your responsibility to provide your pet a happier and healthier life.

Pregnancy is always an exciting and a beautiful experience for living beings. The happiness or joy to see their own little ones, is very unique. Dog pregnancy, puts a lot of responsibility on the owner. It includes health care and safety of both mother and her litter. The canine gestation must be well handled and the dog must be provided with sufficient care.

A dog's pregnancy lasts up to 9 weeks (63 days). However, she might deliver the puppies between 58 to 68 days. As the puppies are growing in the uterus of the mother, she requires proper health care to assure a healthy delivery of the litter. For this, the master of the dog must study the anatomy and pregnancy of the dog breed. Ignorance of the master during this phase, can prove harmful to the dog and also for her future puppies. Like any other expectant mother, a female dog during the pregnancy requires plenty of care, love and affection.

Pregnancy Stages in Dogs

Gestation Period
Dogs come in heat twice a year and it may last up to 3 weeks. This is the time the dogs get vulnerable and would want to mate. There are no tests available to diagnose the pregnancy in dogs. Hence, a dog is likely to show signs of pregnancy after 25-36 days of mating. X-rays can be used to detect the pregnancy too. A dog diagnosed of pregnancy goes through 9 weeks of gestation, which includes physical, behavioral and dietary changes.

Whelping
The first approach towards preparing the delivery of the puppies is making a whelping box for the mother. The owner must select a place where he/she wants their dog to give birth to her pups. Create a small whelping box to keep the pups close to the mother. Make sure that the box is away from the daily household activities. The mother must have some time alone with her puppies for a few days after her delivery. This helps the mother and the puppies to bond well with each other. Use newspapers, as they can be regularly changed and also act as good absorbent. After the dog reaches the 58th day of gestation, keep checking her rectal temperature to predict the birth timing.

Labor
Stages of dog labor can be explained as follows.

Stage 1
As the dog's body prepares to enter the labor phase, it is the sign that she will soon be delivering her puppies. The opening of the uterus expands to be able to push out the puppies through the vagina. During this phase, the dog is likely to become restless, refuse to eat or drink and moves around in circles. She will try to look for an isolated spot in the house, to avoid getting disturbed at this stage. Some dogs might even vomit, as the body gets prepared for the birth of the pups. The opening of the vulva swells and excretes white yellowish liquid. During the process of labor, the dog will choose to urinate or defecate outside the house. The mother will also suffer from uterine contractions which tend to last from 6 to 18 hours. However, towards the end of this stage, the mother's cervix will have dilated, creating enough space for the puppies to pass through it.

Stage 2
The uterine contractions increase and placental water breaks, which is excreted through the vagina of the mother. The second stage is painful as the dog has to take too much efforts to push out puppies. The mother tends to suffer from contractions after every 2 to 3 minutes. Every pup is delivered in a placenta, which the mother licks off, after the pup is out. She also bites off the umbilical chord attached to the pup and cleans the pup herself. Each pup is delivered after every half hour. However, if the mother puts more strain then she might deliver the puppies quickly. It is better to let the mother do all the cleaning of her pups as it helps her know her newborn and her licking can help the pup breathe. In case the mother is too tired and unable to clean her pup, the owner must do the deed for her.

It takes an interval of four hours for the mother to deliver all her pups. However, if it exceeds four hours, it is better to take her to a veterinarian. If you see a pup coming out of the vagina, you can give a gentle downward push to help the mother with her birth.

Stage 3
During this stage of labor, the uterus of the dog completely contracts and all the remaining placenta, blood and other fluids are excreted out of her body.

After 32 days, the dog's appetite will increase again. The mother is the only source of food for the puppies. Therefore, she must be well fed to produce sufficient milk for her young ones. Moderate exercise and good diet for the mother is sufficient to keep her healthy.

After Pregnancy Care and Body Changes
24 hours after the delivery, the mother and her young ones must be examined by the vet. A healthy diet must be planned for the mother and she must drink clean and fresh water. Watching the new pups and mother could be quite a treat. However, they must be left alone as much as possible as its important for them to bond. Due to the physical changes in the body of the mother, she will pass blood clots and other vaginal discharge for a few days. This should last for 7 days. The breasts and nipples must be cleaned with warm water. When the puppies begin to develop teeth, they might bite the nipples which can cause sores. Therefore, keep a check on the breasts and nipples daily. Groom your dog frequently to keep her from any other ailments.

Temperament and behavior of each dog is influenced by its breed. Therefore, the owner must study the breed and its anatomy well, to understand the gestation stages. Sufficient knowledge about dog pregnancy can help you assist your dog in a great way.

Sometimes, dogs are affected by constipation, which could come about due to a number of reasons like wrong foods, overeating, dehydration and more. One thing is clear though that constipation can play havoc in your dog's life, just like it would in yours. In such a situation, the best thing to do for your dog's health is to use some natural laxatives and get rid of this problem. Why the stress on natural? Because these can be easily procured and they won't have any negative effects on your dog's system either.

Water
Sounds too simple? Good. That's how it should be. Sometimes a dog gets dehydrated and therefore, it causes major problems in digestion. The first thing one should do when one's dog is constipated is to encourage him to have a lot of water. Also, increase his fluid intake by supplementing other additives like broth (unsalted), and soups.

Pumpkin
You can either mash a pumpkin yourself or buy a can of crushed pumpkin (plain pumpkin puree, not the one that has spices in it!). Use this mixture to feed the dog. Pumpkin has a lot of water content and is also a rich source of fiber. Both these products help tremendously in relieving a dog's constipation. Make sure it is no more than 2 teaspoons at one time.

Bran
One of the main reasons that dogs suffer from constipation is due to the lack of fiber in their foods. A constipated dog should (therefore) be fed with foods that have a high content of fiber in them. Brans of all kinds (wheat, rice, oats) work effectively as a natural laxative. Mix some water in it and feed the dog, or add about a teaspoon of the bran to his food.

Milk
Milk usually causes diarrhea in pet, but in a situation like this, a little milk goes a long way. Choose real dairy milk and feed your dog about 1/8th of a cup (puppies) or a cup (adult dogs) twice in the day.

Metamucil (Psyllium)
This is a form of fiber that helps to increase the bulk of stool in the dog. This results in stimulating the intestinal contractions and therefore, promotes bowel movements. Give about - 2 teaspoons to your dog every 24 hours.

Milk of Magnesium
Milk of magnesium or magnesium hydroxide can be given to dogs in small amounts to relieve them of constipation problems. This mineral helps to increase the water content and therefore, induces stools.

Oils
Adding small amounts ( - 1 teaspoons) of oils like olive oil, safflower oil, mineral oil or Castor oil in your dog's meals can help in making the defecation process easy. This remedy can be carried forth for a week at a time.

Walk the Dog
Many times, a distinct lack of exercising can cause the dog to become constipated. In dealing with that, make sure that you take your dog for a rigorous walk and run everyday. The other advantage of walking your dog is that the dog will feed on natural growing grass which helps in relieving constipation.

P.S. - Make sure that you consult your vet once before you administer any of these dog constipation remedies as a form of natural laxatives.

Other Pointers

Make sure that you carry forth good dog care so that it is not attacked by other dog illnesses. What are the steps that you should include in your routine? Here are the following.
  • Observe his stools. These are the first indicators of your dog's health problems.
  • If your dog has a lot of fur, make sure that the fur is well trimmed near its rectum. The fur there can block stools, leading to inflammation. This will discourage your dog from defecating. The direct result of which is constipation in dogs.
  • Ensure that the dog gets enough exercise and water content.
  • Take him to a vet regularly to rule out any other health issues.
  • Ask your vet for a de-worming medication from time to time.
These natural laxatives will help you to provide the much-needed relief for your dog. But the next time try and ensure that dog constipation is never an issue because it takes a toll on the dog.

We all love our pet but sometimes when they keep forcing us to take them out for a walk or to do their business, we may get irritated, especially if it's in the middle of something important. They may also get annoyed when we refuse to take them. So, it's better to give them the liberty to go out whenever they want, just by installing a pet door. This is a very simple way of getting rid of the most common difficulty faced by most pet owners. Pet door installation is a very simple procedure and it requires very common things that you can easily get from the market. You get different types of pet doors in the market which you need to just install on your door. The following paragraphs will help you to get your pet door work done easily and in very less time.

Pet Door Installation

A pet door is usually installed at the back door of the house. It is made in the bottom part of door which has a locking mechanism and can be easily used by your pet. The size of the pet door will obviously depend upon the pet you have. If you have a cat then the door will not be big but if it's a big dog then you may have to get a bigger pet door to make sure he can pass easily without hurting himself. So, following are some easy tips to install a pet door.

Things Required
  • Pet door (according to the size of your pet)
  • Tape measure
  • Masking tape
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Jigsaw
  • Screwdriver
  • Exterior caulking
Method
  • First thing to do is to measure the height of your dog's chest from the ground which will give you an idea of the height of the dog door. Mark this height on the door which should lie horizontally on the center of the door. Now with the help of a pencil marker extend the lines vertically and horizontally to about a level of four feet from the height marked.
  • Now take the pet door template and place it on top of the door so that the center of the template comes exactly above the intersection point of the lines drawn. Check that it is placed straight and in one level. Now with the help of a pencil, trace the outline of the template which will give you a rectangular box structure.
  • Now take a drill and drill four holes on the four corners of the rectangle. Always keep the drill vertical while drilling. Make holes of about inch depth. Now insert the jigsaw into one of the holes and cut across the line of the rectangle. Completely cut out the rectangular part from the door.
  • Put exterior caulking all around the opening of the rectangle so that the pet door remains water tight. Now place the pet door frame on the rectangle and press it. Remove the excess caulking and cover it with the help of painter's tape so that it doesn't come out.
  • Now put a security panel on the pet door from the inside of the door so as to prevent the entry of other wild animals when you are away from home and also to restrict your pet from going out at night.
So these were some easy steps to follow while installing a pet door. Now all you have to do is train your pet to use the pet door. Don't worry at all, as it takes just a few hours to train them. Pet doors may raise some security concerns as pet doors for big dogs are usually big and hence even human beings can go through them. Hence, while installing a pet door keep in mind that your door lock is quite away from the pet door. You can also check if your hand can reach the door knob through the pet door. If it does not then your house will be secure. But to remain on the safer side it's better to have pet doors for small pets. I hope this article helped you to get your pet door installed.

How are Dog Foods Rated?
Based on AAFCO Standards

The rating for dog foods should ideally have products that meet the standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). According to this non-profit organization's standards for pet food, if the dog food is to be deemed as 'complete and balanced food', then it must undergo laboratory analysis along with feeding trials. It is then provided with the label that states that the brand meets the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles (as stated by AAFCO). The nutrition standard is judged for two stages, the adult stage, and the growth and reproduction stage, which refers to lactating female dogs and puppies. Brands which have had pet food recalls, according to the US Food and Drug Administration, are not included in this rating list.

Ingredients

One must buy the best quality dog food that contains essential nutrients required for the longevity and health of the dog. These essential nutrients include carbohydrates, fiber sources, and protein. You need to make sure that the dog food you choose has these nutrients in required amount. This does not mean you need to include every protein source in the diet. Simple sources like chicken, lamb, and turkey, are better than some unknown protein type.

Whole grains, fruits and vegetables, named fats, natural preservatives, and chelated minerals are good for dogs, while protein fillers, grain remnants, synthetic preservatives, and artificial coloring are extremely bad for them.

Chicken meal or turkey meal refers to the meat concentrates that have higher level of proteins than fresh sources. So, a chicken meal will ideally contain two to three hundred percent more protein than chicken, and is thus very good for the dog. It is also important to note that certain ingredients like duck have around eighty percent water, which is lost in cooking, thus lowering the nutritional value of the food.

Ingredients like brown rice and white rice have modest nutritional value. Some ingredients like tomato pomace, avocado, oat hulls, yeast, and garlic are controversial, as some critics deem them as harmful for dogs, while others think of them as being of good nutritional value.

Watch out for ingredients like cornmeal, sorghum, brewer's rice, and chicken by-products, all of which have almost zero nutritional value for your dog.
Apart from food for adult dogs, there are a number of popular puppy dog foods like GO! Fit and Free Grain Free Puppy, Orijen Puppy, Castor & Pollux Natural Ultramix Puppy, and Wellness CORE Puppy. These foods are formulated keeping the puppy's nutritional needs in mind. Similarly, there are dog foods that are made especially for older dogs, like GO! Fit and Free Grain Free Senior. The pet food recalls has made people aware of the importance of reading beyond the names of the brands. Therefore, now you can see people scrutinizing the ingredients and labels properly. It is important to do so, as you can then understand the fillers and other products used in the dog food. If the dog has a specific health complication, then doing this becomes even more important. Always consult a veterinarian while making food choices for your dog if it has any health ailment or allergy. Knowing about what goes into your dog food can help you make intelligent decisions about what is right for your pet.

One of the commonly faced nail problems in pet dogs is the problem of dry and brittle nails. Most times you will observe the nails crumbling easily while trimming or sloughing during grooming. Well, while breaking nails can be attributed to your dog's active lifestyle which involves digging holes and scratching posts, brittle nails in dogs is usually a symptom of certain nail or nail bed disorders caused by infection, diseases or trauma to the nails.

Brittle Nails Cause

Physical Trauma or Injury: Injuries to the nails can be painful for the dogs especially dogs with long nails. Untrimmed nails in dogs can split or break during intense exercise or activity and even when the dog is unaccustomed to walking on a hard surface. Regular nail trimming using specially designed nail trimmers is important to your dog's health and well-being.

Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy: This is an immune mediated disease which causes dry and brittle nails in dogs. The disease results in an overactive immune system which affects the nail and nail beds. This in turn leads to splitting and breaking of nails which never really heal. So eventually you might observe the loss of claws from all the paws. Other symptoms of Lupoid Onychodystrophy include twisted claws, painful paws, secondary infection and lameness. For diagnosing the disease the biopsy of a claw needs to be done. Once a firm diagnosis is reached by the veterinarian, treatment would include use of essential fatty acid (EFA) supplements such as fish oil, vitamin A treatment, antibiotic treatment with tetracycline and niacinamide. In certain cases the removal of claws might be necessary in order to alleviate the pain. The dog breeds most susceptible to this disease are rottweilers and greyhounds.

Yeast Infection in Dogs: Canine yeast infection is caused by Candida albicans yeast which live in your pet's body and consume sugar and fats in order to thrive and grow. They affect the immune system, mouth, nose, ears, and gastrointestinal and genital tracts of the dogs causing health problems such as allergies, vaginal and bladder infection and skin disorders. While a healthy dog with an immune system which is intact is able to fight off the infection, a dog with a weak immune system can suffer from a host of health problems. Apart from brittle and dry nails, yeast infections in dogs can also cause allergies, constipation, ear infections, itching, skin rashes and many other dog health problems.

Nail Bed Tumors in Dogs: Nail bed tumors in dogs affect the nail matrix, the nail beds that contains nerves, blood vessels and the melanin-producing cells. Apart from brittle nails, these tumors cause tumor like growth on the nail bed, limping, bleeding and ulcerations. Since they are easily confused with bone inflammation or nail infections, the diagnostic procedures for this condition include cytology and tissue biopsy. The treatment for this cancerous growth is the amputation of the digits in order to prevent the re-occurrence of the tumor.

Fungal Infection: Onychomycosis is the term used to denote a fungal infection in the claw folds or around the nail bed. This infection is characterized by the dog constantly licking its paws, brittle nails and swelling in the feet. To diagnose a fungal infection, a skin scraping may be needed. The possible causes of fungal infections could be certain medication to suppress her immune system. Antifungal medication is prescribed for treating the condition.

The other symptoms of nail infections or diseases affecting the nails include licking of the paws, lameness, pain in the feet, swelling and inflammation of the surrounding tissues and abnormal nail color. This condition will perhaps be apparent when you notice your dog limping in certain cases.

In addition to these causes of brittle nails, deficiency of essential vitamins and other such nutritional deficiencies might lead to chipping and cracking of the nails. Adding zinc supplements to the diet and the presence of foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids can resolve this issue. The effectiveness of brittle nails treatment is based on the underlying cause of the problem. While fungal and bacterial infections can be remedied by topical treatments or ointments which are administered to the affected area, in some cases surgical removal of the nail plate might be necessary. The best brittle nails remedy and prevention is to keep the dog's nails groomed well. Also avoid clipping your dog's toenails too close to the nail bed. These nicks might cause bleeding and infection in the dog's paws. For more information on treatment of the other nail disorders, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Meningitis is a medical condition that is characterized by the inflammation of the meninges, which are the membranes or layers of protective tissue enveloping the brain and the spinal cord. It can also affect dogs. Viral, bacterial or fungal infections are often the contributory factors for meningitis in dogs. Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever or ehrlichiosis could also increase the risk of canine meningitis. Behavioral changes, fever and loss of coordination are some of the common symptoms of canine meningitis. Certain dog breeds such as Pug, Maltese Terrier, Bernese Mountain Dog and Beagle are more vulnerable and at an increased risk of contracting this condition, but that doesn't mean other breeds are safe. This condition can affect all breeds. Since this condition can cause serious harm to your dog, it would be best if dog owners get some idea about the symptoms of this condition. If diagnosed in the early stages, the prognosis is good. If not treated on time, this inflammatory pathological condition can lead to fatal consequences.

Symptoms of Canine Meningitis

Has your dog developed hyperesthesia or an extreme sensitivity to touch? Dogs afflicted with meningitis generally develop this problem. They might suffer from a fever that waxes and wanes. Meningitis generally impacts the behavior and leaves them agitated and confused. Generally, dogs suffering from meningitis might suffer from stiff neck muscles. Meningitis also impacts the dog's appetite. So, if your dog is not eating well and seems to have a reduced mobility, you need to consult a veterinarian soon. Dogs suffering from meningitis can also have seizures or muscle spasms. Other symptoms include a lack of muscular coordination, changed gait and unsteady movements. If this condition is not treated soon, it can even lead to depression, progressive paralysis or even blindness, therefore, dog owners need to pay attention to their pet's health.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Canine Meningitis

If your pet has been suffering from any of these symptoms, consult a vet immediately. Certain diagnostic tests would be conducted for confirming the diagnosis. These tests might include CT scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a cerebrospinal fluid tap. Through a CT scan or MRI, the vet might be able to check for any inflammation of the tissue layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Another method is the cerebrospinal fluid tap. This method involves the testing of a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid that coats the brain and spinal cord.

If your dog has been diagnosed with meningitis, the treatment options will depend on the type of meningitis. The doctors will first use the tests to determine whether the dog is suffering from aseptic meningitis or steroid responsive meningitis. Several aspects have to be taken care of. The inflammatory activity has to be suppressed so that the neurological abilities of your dog are not harmed.

In case, your dog is suffering from severe pain and seizures, antibiotics and antiepileptic drugs might be administered to tackle the pain and seizures. In case of the steroid responsive meningitis, steroids will be used to quicken the recovery process. In case of aseptic meningitis, immunosuppressive drugs are prescribed by the veterinarian to tackle the condition. Regular check-ups are required to monitor your dog's response to the treatment. In some cases, you might need to continue giving the medications for life so that this life-threatening condition doesn't relapse. Apart from the medication, provide your pet a good and loving environment at home. Make sure that your dog is comfortable and happy.

If you feel that your dog is exhibiting any of the aforementioned symptoms, you must consult a vet soon. If not diagnosed and treated on time, this condition could turn out to be life-threatening for your pet. So, take care of your dear pet and make all possible efforts to keep your pet healthy.

Ibuprofen is a widely used pain relief medicine mostly advocated for people. Like humans, dogs do suffer from pain and discomfort symptoms that come along with several diseases such as headache, backache, joint pain, arthritis, physical injuries, etc. Nevertheless, when it comes to dealing dog's illnesses, the treatment techniques and prescribed medications are very different from that of humans. Hence, using ibuprofen for dogs is very debatable, though some veterinarians prescribe it in a specific dosage under certain conditions.

What is Ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen is the generic form that encompasses a group of over-the-counter pain medications. Therapeutically, it is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), effective to reduce a wide range of inflammatory symptoms. Being sold as a non-prescribed drug, it is frequently used to manage pain in people, even without the doctor's recommendation. As we all are aware, every chemical based therapeutic drug is associated with temporary or long-term side effects. Similarly, there are certain adverse effects of ibuprofen, particularly when it is taken in a high dose or administered for a longer period.

Ibuprofen for Dogs: Pain
Dog health questions such as 'Is ibuprofen safe for dogs?' or 'Is ibuprofen bad for dogs?' linger on the minds of every pet owners. The answer is both yes and no. To be more precise, ibuprofen for dogs is safe, if given in a correct dose under the supervision of a veterinarian. Otherwise, this anti-inflammatory drug is strictly not recommended for giving in dogs.

The major risk factor for administering ibuprofen in dogs is the danger of toxicity. Every dog owner wants the best for his/her pet dog, in terms of everything. At times, a pet owner gives a dose of ibuprofen to alleviate pain in his pet, without thinking twice about the toxic concentration and associated side effects. In contrary to human treatment, ibuprofen overdose or toxicity in dogs occurs even with a very low dose.

Toxicity
The most noticeable side effect of ibuprofen in dogs is mild to severe stomach ulcer. Bleeding in the stomach, if left unchecked, causes excessive loss of blood, leading to various weakness symptoms. Sign and symptoms to watch out for ibuprofen overdose in dogs are:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased lethargy
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness and vomiting
  • Blood in vomiting
  • Black or tarry stools
  • Dehydration
In severe cases, ibuprofen overdose can lead to kidney problems, seizures and anemia in dogs. In order to identify ibuprofen toxicity in dogs, the veterinarian may examine medical history of the pet and perform blood tests. If admitted immediately (within 2 hours of ingesting ibuprofen), your pet may be given activated charcoal to absorb traces of ibuprofen from the stomach and other bodily systems. If required, blood transfusion may be done to replace loss of excess blood.

Other Information
No doubt, ibuprofen may be prescribed by a veterinarian in order to manage painful symptoms in dogs. But, it does not mean that this pain medicine can be given frequently to the pet dog without taking the vet's advice. On the safer side, give your dog ibuprofen, only if the vet recommends it. Also, stick to the prescribed ibuprofen dosage for dogs. Doing so, you can minimize the risk of developing unusual dog health complications.

So, now you know how dangerous is ibuprofen for dogs. Be a responsible owner and keep this pain relief medication behind close doors, far away from the reach of your dog to prevent accidental ingestion. By any chance, your dog manifests any of the ibuprofen overdose symptoms, get immediate veterinary care and attention to avoid serious medical conditions.
